Three routes lead to 31 geosites in the Arouca Geopark. Some sections are intended for travel by car, while others are covered on foot. The geopark has 41 geosites in total, including three of international significance, and is recognised by UNESCO. The Rota dos Geossítios offers a practical way to explore a landscape revealed through both individual landmarks and a variety of routes.
Landscapes and Trails in the Arouca Geopark
Another striking destination is Frecha da Mizarela, where the Caima River plunges around 75 metres down a waterfall. The Passadiços do Paiva form an eight-kilometre trail along the riverbank in the Município de Arouca. The Ponte 516 Arouca offers another perspective on the Paiva: this 516-metre-long suspension footbridge crosses the river, 175 metres above it. Access to the bridge depends on operating conditions; check visitor information before making plans. These measurements describe two different experiences: a longer route along the riverbank and a single bridge high above the water.
Ria, Canals and Coast
In Aveiro, the Ria de Aveiro is connected to the city by the Canal das Pirâmides, the Canal de São Roque and the Canal dos Santos Mártires. Tourist trips on Moliceiro boats are available on the canals. In Aveiro, waterways and maritime traditions are therefore more than just features of the landscape: they are also part of the cityscape and the experience on the water.
Praia da Barra offers conditions for surfing, bodyboarding, kitesurfing, sailing and sport fishing. Conditions vary by season. Praia da Torreira lies on the coastal strip separating the Ria from the sea and offers opportunities for surfing, sailing and windsurfing; conditions there are also seasonal. Both descriptions mention water sports, but with different emphases: bodyboarding and kitesurfing are among the options at Barra, while Torreira offers windsurfing.
Praia do Bico in Murtosa offers a different kind of beach: it is an easily accessible river and estuary beach, with leisure facilities and services nearby. For those who would also like to explore the waterscape through its cuisine, Praia da Torreira has a connection to fishing, which no longer has the importance it once did. Dishes associated with it include eel escabeche and eel stew.
Maritime History and Culture
The Museu Marítimo de Ílhavo has five permanent exhibitions on maritime themes. The Sala da Ria explores the agromaritime activities of the Ria de Aveiro. The Navio-Museu Santo André is also part of the region’s maritime history: the ship served in Portugal’s cod-fishing fleet and was built in the Netherlands in 1948. In August 2001, the Santo André began a new chapter, illustrating trawl-net cod fishing and honouring the memory of its crews.
The Museu de Aveiro is housed in the former Convento de Jesus. Its collection includes paintings, sculptures, gilded woodcarvings, tiles, goldsmiths’ work and textiles dating from the 14th to the 19th century. A route through Aveiro’s Art Nouveau architecture offers another way to discover its buildings. In Santa Maria da Feira, the castle is a prominent Portuguese military monument, with a range of defensive features dating from the 11th to the 16th century. The castle tower is intended as a cultural venue for conferences, performances, exhibitions and other events; specific programmes may change.
The Festa das Fogaceiras is a distinctive tradition in Santa Maria da Feira. It takes place every year on 20 January. During the procession, girls carry Fogaças on their heads. If you would like to plan your visit around this date, check the arrangements for the relevant year.
Local Specialities and Getting Around
Aveiro is also known for its traditional ovos moles. This sweet is sold in small wooden barrels or wrapped in a wafer pastry shell shaped in various ways. Its different presentations give the product a distinctive local character, without implying an additional activity or a particular route.
Aveiro is connected to Portugal’s Northern railway line. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable in advance, as times may change. Within the Município de Aveiro, the BUGA public bicycle-sharing system has 20 stations in different parts of the area. Use is paid and managed through a mobile app. Check that your chosen station is available before travelling. This makes it possible to combine the experiences described—from heritage and the Ria and coast to the trails of the Arouca Geopark—with practical guidance, without prescribing a single itinerary.
