Twelve watermills spread across four areas make Parque Temático Molinológico a living museum. On guided visits to Núcleo Museológico do Moinho e do Pão, you can see working mills and how different types of grain are processed. Rota do Moleiro connects the park’s four areas. It is considered an easy route and has several rest and leisure areas.

Mill Trails and Rural Routes

Rota dos Espigueiros offers a different rural perspective. In the village of Vilarinho de S. Luís, in the parish of Palmaz, the Espigueiro stands out in a distinctly rural landscape. Here, the focus is on a single structure and its surroundings.

In Figueiredo, in the parish of Pinheiro da Bemposta, two routes explore different themes: the short Rota do Rio is about 3 kilometres long and follows the Antuã River. Rota do Rey passes built heritage in the same village, dating back to the time of the Foral de Figueiredo e Bemposta. The Roteiro Literário Ferreira de Castro offers a longer route with a literary focus: it extends for 13 kilometres in Ossela and includes 30 stops. Its length is therefore quite different from that of the approximately 3-kilometre Rota do Rio. Trilhos do Comandante are suitable for mountain biking, trail running, hiking, walking, and running.

There is also a circular route in the historic centre: it is about 1,800 metres long and starts and ends at the Loja Interativa de Turismo. Its approximate length makes it another option for combining a walk with the centre’s sights.

Churches, Transport History, and Museums

Igreja Matriz de Oliveira de Azeméis was built between 1719 and 1729. Azulejo panels on its exterior depict scenes from the life of Jesus. Another historic monument is Cruzeiro do Pinheiro da Bemposta: this National Monument dates from 1604 and was later restored. Malaposta do Curval offers another perspective on the history of travel. Its building is classified as a Property of Public Interest and was one of 32 stops on the stagecoach route from Porto to Lisbon.

Several museums focus on different subjects. Casa-Museu Regional de Oliveira de Azeméis was founded by local residents who had been invited by donors João Marques de Almeida Carvalho and Constantino José de Carvalho. Casa-Museu Ferreira de Castro is housed in a building dating from the mid-19th century and preserves the writer’s books, manuscripts, and personal belongings. The collections on display at Museu Regional de Cucujães include traditional tools, regional costumes, and archaeological material.

Glassmaking and Local Specialities

The history of glassmaking dates back to 1528, when Fábrica de Vidro do Côvo was founded at Quinta do Côvo, making it one of Portugal’s first and longest-lasting glass factories. Turismo Industrial de Oliveira de Azeméis gives visitors the chance to see and experience local production processes and learn about the production techniques used by local businesses. Participating experiences may change.

Local products also offer a glimpse into culinary traditions. Pão de Ul and regueifa de Ul are traditionally baked in wood-fired ovens. Papas de S. Miguel is made with meat marinated in Vinho d’alho and cornmeal. Beijinhos de Azeméis are among Oliveira de Azeméis’ traditional confectionery specialities. Cheese is also one of the gastronomic products particularly highlighted.

Getting Around

Loja Interativa de Turismo provides information about accommodation, restaurants, sights, and activities, and rents bicycles for exploring the town. Zona de Lazer do Pedregulhal is a leisure area by the Caima River, completed in 2013. On warm days, it invites visitors to go for a swim. Discoveries here range from mills and historic buildings to local products and a riverside stay.
