A former factory building offers a glimpse into the history of the hat industry in São João da Madeira: the Museu da Chapelaria opened on 22 June 2005 in the former premises of Empresa Industrial da Chapelaria. Themed tours can focus on the history of hats, how a hat is made, and technical and technological developments. This brings a single craft to life from several perspectives.

The footwear industry also shapes the cultural offer. The Museu do Calçado documents its history in São João da Madeira and the development of shoe design in Portugal in the 20th century. It also looks at technological and creative developments in the 21st century. As a place for learning, creativity and experimentation, it invites visitors to engage in an interactive and questioning way. Visitors with reduced mobility can access all areas via ramps or a lift.

Further insights range from craftsmanship to technical testing: at the Centro de Formação Profissional da Indústria de Calçado, visitors can see old machinery and handcrafted tools. At the Centro Tecnológico do Calçado de Portugal, they can observe how a shoe-testing laboratory works. Viarco preserves a traditional process for making graphite and coloured pencils. For factory tours, the Welcome Center at Torre Oliva accepts reservations, provides industrial guides and enables visitors to sign up for workshops.

Art, architecture and cultural venues

The Centro de Arte Oliva regularly presents and interprets visual art from the 20th and 21st centuries, as well as contemporary and outsider art. The Norlinda e José Lima Collection comprises around 1,200 works of art, including works by approximately 250 Portuguese and 230 international artists. The works date from 1926 to 2019. The Treger Saint Silvestre Collection offers a different range of materials, including painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, tapestry, photography, electrical mechanisms and reused objects.

The buildings also tell stories of different uses. Paços da Cultura is housed in the renovated former town hall, which was converted into a versatile cultural centre. It includes a municipal exhibition gallery and a Sala da Memória; its auditorium has 191 seats. Casa da Criatividade is located in a former cinema building and was constructed to a design by architect Filipe Oliveira Dias. At the Museu da Chapelaria, meanwhile, the building’s former use as a factory is paired with a simple, symmetrical design on Rua Oliveira Júnior.

Parks for recreation and observing nature

The Parque de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres brings together a range of options for exercise and relaxation. It is the oldest park in the Concelho and has a fitness trail and cycle path. Facilities also include a picnic area, a playground, a tea room, a lake, a bridge and landscaped areas with benches. You can enjoy the park for sport or take a break there, depending on your interests.

Parque Ferreira de Castro offers a different focus: it was established as a public recreational space on the rural part of an estate acquired by the Município. At Parque do Rio Ul, visitor facilities and observation points are part of what the park offers; information covers fauna, flora and biodiversity. A programme published in 2024 describes guided activities exploring the park’s history, landscape, and animal and plant life.

Bus services in town and the metropolitan area

There are two bus services to bear in mind when planning your journey. Bus services operated by the municipal transport company TUS in São João da Madeira are free for all users. REDE UNIR buses operate in the town and the surrounding Porto metropolitan area, using the Andante ticketing system. This information gives you a practical starting point if you plan to include buses in your itinerary.
