Sever do Vouga is best explored through two themes: the waters of the Vouga and traces of ancient routes. The municipal Ecopista do Vouga follows the former section of the Vouga railway line along the river, from the mouth of the Rio Mau to the Cedrim stop. The former railway section gives the route a historical dimension; further discoveries range from waterfalls to archaeological traces.

River Landscapes and Waterways

Cabreia Waterfall is in the parish of Silva Escura on the Rio Mau, whose waters plunge down a rocky slope. A walking trail leads to the waterfall and to restored mills. Carrazedo Waterfall also connects water with built features in the landscape: alongside a series of mills, it forms a small pond and is considered an option for a family walk.

At the Gresso, the Gresso Waterfall and Gresso Escarpment Walkway lead to a mountain stream, a tributary of the Vouga. The Gresso trail runs through shady woodland with a dense riverside gallery. FĂlveda Waterfall offers a different scale: its several cascades descend more than 40 metres; over a stretch of river about 200 metres long, the total elevation difference is 75 metres.

The Vouga displays the varied features of a free-flowing river: rapids, temporary islands, backwaters, beaches and pools. Well-preserved riverside galleries support great biological diversity. Downstream from the Ponte de Pessegueiro bridge, the river has the status of a Site of Community Importance for the protection of migratory fish species.

The Couto de Esteves/Ribeiradio reservoir extends for about 14 kilometres through scenic valleys and is suitable for canoeing. If you plan this activity, check the water conditions in advance. The Praia Fluvial da Quinta do Barco river beach is a bathing spot with water quality rated as excellent. If you plan to visit during the bathing season, check the current operating conditions.

Routes and Cultural Monuments

Bridges and old roads also tell the story of connections across the region. The Poço de S. Tiago Bridge was completed in 1913 for the new Vouga Valley railway. It is about 28.5 metres high and has twelve arches; the bridge offers panoramic views over the Vouga and its natural surroundings. The Via Romana da Ereira is older: it formed part of the route connecting Viseu with the Olisipo–Bracara Augusta road. The railway bridge and Roman road thus point to different periods of travel.

Anta da Cerqueira, also known as Anta da Pedra Moura, is in the Serra do Arestal. It is a passage dolmen dating back about 5,000 years, is considered the best-preserved megalithic example in the area and is classified as a Property of Public Interest. The ruins of Castro de Cedrim, also known as Povoado de CastĂŞlo, lie on a spur-shaped platform in the Serra das Talhadas; remains of a Cyclopean wall are preserved at the site. The rock known as Forno dos Moiros bears engravings whose origins probably date back to the Bronze Age.

In the town centre of Sever do Vouga, the pillory stands in the square in front of the old prison. It symbolises municipal power, which arose from the town charter granted by King Manuel I in 1514. The pillory of Couto de Esteves also has a historical and legal context: it is believed to have been erected in the early 16th century and is classified as a Property of Public Interest under Decree-Law No. 23 122 of 11 October 1933.

In Amiais, measures were taken at the communal threshing floor, the granaries and the traditional granite houses to preserve the cultural and historical identity of the village and its people. The engravings at Forno dos Moiros offer another point of archaeological interest, this time with origins probably dating back to the Bronze Age.
