Eleven esteiros—lagoon channels connected to the Ria de Aveiro—reach inland into Estarreja and are of great importance to the municipality’s ecosystem. The landscape can be explored along paths through rice fields, reed beds and small agricultural plots; nearby, museums and boatyards tell the story of the region’s work with rice, salt and water.
Lagoon Landscapes and Wildlife Watching
Around 26 percent of the Município de Estarreja is part of the Ria de Aveiro Special Protection Area in the Natura 2000 network. In the part of the Concelho belonging to Baixo-Vouga-Lagunar, reed beds provide important nesting habitat for purple herons, mallards, marsh harriers and small songbirds. The wooded network of channels in the lagoon area also provides habitat for otters.
Estarreja is part of a larger northern lagoon area stretching from Furadouro to the south of Aveiro. This wider landscape includes extensive salt pans, moliço and artisanal fishing; its history extends beyond the municipality’s boundaries. In the last century, the historic Esteiro de Estarreja was the Ria de Aveiro’s second-largest salt transshipment point.
BioRia Trails Through Diverse Landscapes
BioRia has created a network of walking and cycling routes that bring visitors into direct contact with nature. The project began in 2005 with the Percurso de Salreu, which was equipped with information panels and visitor facilities. Check which facilities are currently available before your visit. The Centro de Interpretação Ambiental (CIA), a wayfinding point for the BioRia trail network, is also located at the start of the route. Its content and activities focus on environmental education, nature conservation, biodiversity and the natural features of the Concelho; its programme may change.
The Percurso de Salreu is an eight-kilometre circular route through rice fields, salt marshes, reed beds and stands of bulrushes. The six-kilometre Percurso do Rio Antuã starts at the Esteiro de Estarreja and follows the riverbanks to the point where the Rio Antuã flows into the Ria de Aveiro. The two routes therefore differ both in length and in the landscapes described: one is a circular route through several habitats, while the other follows a river.
The Percurso do Rio Jardim follows a U-shaped route along the Rio Jardim; dense tree cover along the banks provides shaded sections. The start and finish are on the road on the western side, which runs parallel to the railway line. The route connects the Esteiro de Canelas with the Esteiro de Salreu. By contrast, the Percurso do Bocage follows the Ribeiro de Canelas, an arm of the Ria de Aveiro, and passes through several of the region’s typical habitats.
The Percurso de Fermelã also crosses the bocage: a rural patchwork of small fields divided by living hedges and man-made waterways. Marinhoa cattle, a native breed, graze in the fields along the route. Formerly, their strength made them useful in agriculture and for hauling the nets used by Arte Xávega fishers. This connection between landscape and working traditions adds an agricultural history to the story of nature.
Boatbuilding and Cultural History
In the boatyards of the municipality of Pardilhó, master carpenters still build traditional wooden boats. Pardilhó still has a boatbuilding workshop where visitors can see the construction and painting of moliceiros, bateiras and boats used for Arte Xávega fishing. Check in advance whether a visit is available.
The Museu Fábrica da História – Arroz is housed in the ruins of the former Hidro-Eléctrica de Estarreja rice-husking factory, which operated from 1922 until the end of the 1980s. The museum focuses on rice cultivation in Baixo Vouga Lagunar, including Canelas, Fermelã and Salreu, and places agricultural practices in a new context.
Another way to explore history is to visit the Casa-Museu Egas Moniz, the only house museum of a Portuguese Nobel laureate. Egas Moniz received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1949. The collections include paintings, furniture, ceramics, goldsmiths’ work, glass, textiles, prints and sculptures, as well as his personal library. The Igreja Matriz de São Tiago de Beduído contains a 13th-century inscription and a 15th-century sculpture dedicated to its patron saint. The Concelho also has notable examples of Art Nouveau associated with Ernesto Korrodi, Francisco da Silva Rocha, Jaime Inácio dos Santos and José de Pinho.
