In Águeda, river landscapes, historical collections and regional cuisine come together with different ways to shape a trip. The Trilho do Rio Águeda connects the town centre with the Pateira de Fermentelos; museums, paths through woodland and farmland, and cultural events each offer their own focus.

River Trails and Landscapes

The Trilho do Rio Águeda runs along the banks of the Águeda River and connects the town centre with the Pateira de Fermentelos. Along the way are the former Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, cultivated farmland and river floodplains. The Pateira de Fermentelos lies close to Águeda and is described as the largest natural lagoon on the Iberian Peninsula. Its landscape is shaped by calm waters and a rich variety of flora and fauna.

Another route option is the PR 11 – Trilho do Vale Serrano, which begins and ends at the Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena in Agadão. The route passes the Agadão River and a small waterfall, as well as farmland and woodland. The two trails therefore differ in their described routes: the Trilho do Rio Águeda connects two named destinations, while the PR 11 starts and ends at the same point.

The Parque de Alta Vila can also be explored via its continuous footpath, which connects the lower and upper parts of the park. For cyclists, the Águeda Bike Park offers another option, with a network of mountain bike trails. The trails were developed in accordance with the International Mountain Bicycling Association Europe guidelines for sustainable trails. A trail can also be ridden with an adapted bicycle. The facilities are generally intended for public use; access may change on competition days, public holidays, in bad weather or during maintenance work. Check access conditions before your visit.

Museums, History and Culture

The Casa Museu do Cancioneiro de Águeda is housed in a restored 18th-century manor. Its exhibits include traditional clothing, household and farming tools, furniture from the Alta Vila house, cloths and quilts, as well as items from the Cancioneiro collection. The Museu da Fundação's collection spans several centuries and includes paintings, sculptures, furniture, ceramics, ivory and silver from the 17th to the 20th century. There are six rooms for permanent exhibitions and one for temporary exhibitions; the exhibition layout may change.

The region's history can also be traced through specific places. The settlement of Cabeço do Vouga was established during the Iron Age and used again in Roman times. The Igreja de Santa Eulália is dedicated to the patron saint of the city of Águeda and has a richly appointed interior with Renaissance sculptures. Those interested in everyday history will find a different perspective in the Casa Museu collections than at the historic settlement or in the church.

Recurring cultural events include Semana do Teatro, a regular theatre initiative usually held at the Centro de Artes de Águeda. The AgitÁgueda festival takes place every July in the town centre by the river. During the Romaria das Almas Santas da Areosa, farmers make three circuits around the chapel in decorated ox carts—a ritual associated with the traditional practice of a procession.

More Activities and Regional Cuisine

The Centro de Atividades Náuticas Bério Marques offers the public opportunities for informal water sports, especially for learning or taking up a sport. The centre also provides access to the Águeda River and the Braço do Rio for independent use. In Macieira de Alcôba, the Centro Interpretativo do Milho Antigo offers fun educational activities about native maize for all age groups.

Another destination for railway enthusiasts is the Museu do Caminho de Ferro de Macinhata do Vouga. It can be reached by train on the Vouga line, described as Portugal's only narrow-gauge railway branch still in operation. Check train services and timetables before travelling.

Traditional Águeda cuisine includes leitão assado, rojões, lampantana made with mutton or goat, coelho à moda de Águeda, and bacalhau prepared in several ways, including à Lagareiro, albardado and à Ribeirinho. The sweets also have their own names: fuzis, sequilhos, bolo de Páscoa, barrigas de freira and pastéis de Águeda. Caves Primavera offers a guided tour with wine tasting, where visitors can sample white, rosé, red and sparkling wines. Confirm the visit and tasting arrangements in advance.
