Eleven groups of mills, 14 mills and 19 pairs of millstones: the Rota dos Moinhos de Albergaria-a-Velha brings the richness of the milling tradition to life. Watermills shape the rural landscape along the waterways. As a visitor attraction, the route offers insights into the municipality, its people and its history. Water landscapes and biodiversity
Pateira de Frossos lies in Baixo Vouga Lagunar and the hydrobiological system of Ria de Aveiro, in the southwest of the Concelho de Albergaria-a-Velha. Its flora includes 280 species, alongside around 200 animal species. The Guia da Flora describes 50 of the 280 plant species currently inventoried in greater detail, including mosses, ferns and flowering plants. This offers a way to explore the landscape through its individual plant groups.
The Centro de Interpretação da Pateira de Frossos offers several exhibitions that can be visited throughout the year. It is housed in a historic building in Frossos, formerly used as a town hall and prison, dating back to 1714. Butterflies are also part of the interpretation programme, which includes an activity accompanied by a biologist; 27 species of butterfly have already been confirmed in the Pateira. In the butterfly garden at Jardim Didático, visitors can observe the insects up close and learn about their behaviour and life cycles through hands-on activities. The programme is open to the public year-round, but is weather-dependent.
A workshop focuses on suitable plants for infusions. They are gathered, dried and preserved, after which participants can taste the prepared infusions. The focus is therefore not only on identifying and observing plants, but also on each step from gathering to tasting.
Trails of different lengths
The Trilho da Pateira de Frossos (PR4) is an easy, flat circular route covering 8.15 kilometres. It starts in Frossos, next to the Pelourinho, and leads to Parque do Areal, a suitable spot for a picnic. For a shorter loop, consider a circular route of around 1.5 kilometres, starting and ending at Parque dos Moinhos do Porto de Riba. Another trail is 23 kilometres long and passes through bocage landscapes, rice fields and pastures, as well as wetlands with salt marshes, reeds and rushes.
These landscapes offer different perspectives on the surrounding area. Within the bocage landscape, agricultural, forestry and aquatic habitats come together in a small area. In Vilarinho de S. Roque, classified as an Aldeia de Portugal, the village scene includes a waterfall on the Rio Fílveda and agricultural terraces. A trail from the village’s former school also follows paths once used by residents to reach farmland where flax was grown.
Traces from different periods
Traces of a settlement dating back to the end of the Bronze Age, around 3,000 years ago, can be found at Monte de São Julião. Another chapter is told by the Palacete e Castelo da Boa Vista: João Patrício Álvares Ferreira had it built as a holiday residence at the end of the 19th century; it was inaugurated in 1900. Fábrica Alba is an important part of the region’s metallurgical heritage and was founded in 1921 by Comendador Augusto Martins Pereira.
More recent memories also have their place here. Inaugurated in August 2024, the Mural de Frossos honours Dona Natália and the age-old craft tradition of making Bunho mats. The Caminho de Santiago, meanwhile, is regarded in Albergaria-a-Velha as important intangible cultural heritage and part of the place’s memory and identity. It runs for around 14.5 kilometres through the territory of the Concelho.
