Wine-growing history, remarkable architecture and paths around a lake give Anadia many different facets. When choosing accommodation for your trip, you can focus on what matters most to you: architecture and history, wine and cuisine, or walks in the countryside. The following places and themes can be explored as different elements of your trip, without having to combine them into a set itinerary.

Wine-growing history and flavour

The Estação Vitivinícola da Bairrada was founded on 30 June 1887 as the Escola Prática de Viticultura e Pomologia da Bairrada. The first natural sparkling wine in Bairrada was produced on its premises in 1890. This connects the history of winegrowing in Anadia with a specific institutional milestone and an early chapter in regional sparkling-wine production.

Casa do Canto also has a long history: the estate dates back to 1680. Its vineyards lie on the clay-limestone soils of Bairrada, where Baga is the preferred grape variety. The Aliança experience offers a different perspective: it begins with a journey through underground tunnels and includes a tasting of Aliança Baga Clássico Tinto with small Leitão sandwiches. The experience also includes a guided tour of the Aliança Underground Museum, with a wine and food pairing explained by a guide. A reservation is required for this guided tour.

Among the savoury dishes listed for Anadia are Leitão, Chanfana and Negalhos. Sweet treats include Aletria, Amores da Curia, Bolo da Páscoa, Barriga de Freira and Bairradinos. Alongside wine and wineries, a variety of dishes and sweets are also options in their own right.

Museums, architecture and history

The Aliança Underground Museum comprises seven collections spanning different cultural themes. These include African art, ceramics from Caldas da Rainha, historical material relating to Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro, Azulejos, minerals and fossils. The collections range from art and ceramics to geology. Those interested in individual objects and materials will find a different perspective here from the one offered by Anadia’s historic buildings.

The Museu / Palacete José Luciano de Castro is housed in the palace where José Luciano de Castro lived. The building was constructed in 1860. The Igreja Paroquial de Tamengos has an older building history: construction of its main structure began in 1716 and was completed in 1721. The main altar features a limestone sculpture of Saint Peter from the late 14th century, made in a workshop in Coimbra. The construction date and the sculpture belong to different historical periods.

The Paço da Graciosa was built in the last third of the 18th century. A structure in the Neo-Manueline style, built towards the end of the 19th century, is part of its later architecture. It is supported by 17th-century columns salvaged from demolitions in Coimbra. The Paço is classified as a property of public interest. The Curia Palace Hotel is also an example of Art Nouveau: it opened on 25 July 1926. Alongside the hotel, the area classified as a property of public interest includes, among other things, the Chalet Navega, also known as Chalet das Rosas, the Capela da Senhora do Livramento, the Piscina Paraíso, the garage and the surrounding gardens.

Walks and trails

The Anadia Walking Trails project, updated in 2022, comprises six routes, each approximately ten kilometres long: Rota do Poeta/Trilho Vale do Boi, Rota do Espumante e do Azeite/São Domingos, Rota de Pedralva e São Lourenço do Bairro, Rota do Espumante, Rota de Algeriz, and Rota da Lagoa de Torres e Vilarinho do Bairro. In the project, the Rota do Espumante is assigned to the União das Freguesias de Arcos e Mogofores.

In Parque da Curia, paths wind around the lake, lined with centuries-old trees and lush vegetation. The lake is artificial, and boat and pedal-boat rides are available on it. Walking and taking to the water are two different ways to experience the park. Termas da Curia combines traditional thermal bathing culture with modern comfort and technology.

For another view of the wine-growing landscape, visit Baloiço Maria-Gomes, where you can look out over Anadia’s largest vineyard areas. Anadia is also home to a high-performance sports centre called the Velódromo Nacional. These different interests can help guide your choice of destinations and suitable accommodation.
