Vila Nova de Monsarros combines a distinctive relationship with its landscape with tangible traces of its local history. The town lies on the foothills of the Serra do Buçaco. The Rio da Serra, also known as the Angarna, flows through the valley where the settlement developed. The river valley and water management are recurring themes in different aspects of the town, from agricultural irrigation to the Parque Ecológico by the river. There are also two religious buildings with different construction dates and notable features.

River Valley and Irrigation Culture

The fertile plain of Vila Nova de Monsarros has traditionally been irrigated, and the system is still in use today. The channels are called Levadas. However, almost all of them have been replaced by half-pipes laid on cement, which carry water to the agricultural land. Thus, two aspects of the cultural landscape come together: irrigation continues to function, while the channels’ form of construction has changed substantially.

This distinction makes the town’s relationship with water tangible without suggesting that the Levadas are a fully preserved historic system. Those interested in rural cultural history will find here, alongside the setting in a river valley, an enduring feature of everyday agricultural life.

Church Architecture and Historic Features

The current Igreja Matriz is a building from the second half of the 18th century. Its furnishings date back further: the church houses 15th-century limestone sculptures from a workshop in Coimbra, as well as a baptismal font from the early Gothic period of the 16th century. The dates of the building and of the individual pieces should therefore be clearly distinguished. The church building is newer than the sculptures and baptismal font mentioned here.

The Capela de Nossa Senhora das Neves offers a different point of reference in time. It dates from the mid-17th century and stands on a small hill in the town centre. Its altars feature early Baroque carvings. The chapel’s date and the stylistic description of its altar carvings offer different kinds of information: one dates the building, while the other describes the design of the altars. Together with the older pieces in the Igreja Matriz, they provide a basis for comparison across several centuries.

The Parque EcolĂłgico by the Rio da Serra

The completed Parque Ecológico is situated by the Rio da Serra, near the town centre. The park incorporates a watermill, inaugurated on 5 June 2021. This adds further tangible points of interest for a visit to the churches and agricultural irrigation. The park connects the town’s relationship with the river to a place near the centre; the mill, in turn, adds a historic structure to the water-related features. These details can be considered as distinct aspects of the town without combining them into a single complex.

Practical Planning

A specific day of the week is given for travel planning: the weekly AnadiaSIM bus departs Vila Nova de Monsarros on Wednesdays. If you plan to take the bus, check the timetable in advance so your plans are based on current departure times. The town’s other details offer a different guide for planning your time: the church architecture and furnishings tell stories of different centuries, while the irrigation system and park highlight the connection with water and agriculture.
