The Pateira de Fermentelos is the largest natural lake on the Iberian Peninsula; it is part of the Ria de Aveiro Special Protection Area (PTZPE0004) and therefore of the Natura 2000 network. For your trip, you can focus on two things: the waterside landscape and a walk, or local music, church and emigration history.

Pateira, Viewpoints and Places of Remembrance

The Pateira de Fermentelos is considered the largest natural lake on the Iberian Peninsula. It is part of the Ria de Aveiro Special Protection Area (PTZPE0004) and therefore of the Natura 2000 network. For a different perspective on the water, you could take a boat trip in a traditional “bateira”. Before your trip, check whether trips are available during your preferred season.

The Miradouro de Fermentelos, also known as Miradouro do Outeiro, offers a privileged view of the Pateira’s waters and its surroundings. The viewpoint was built between 1960 and 1961. Here, views of the landscape and the history of the structure come together at a named location.

Parque do Emigrante is in Fermentelos, on the left bank of the Pateira, and is a leisure and recreation area. The Monumento ao Emigrante there honours Portuguese emigrants, especially people born in this freguesia. The park thus combines its recreational purpose with a specific connection to local remembrance.

Walking the PR7 and GR58

The PR7 Trilho dos Poços starts at Largo da Pateira, by the Estalagem in Fermentelos. You can begin the circular route at any point along the trail. For planning your time, note the stated duration of three to four hours and the option to start anywhere along the circular route.

Wells are also part of the character of the PR7. Some are still fitted with traditional waterwheels, recalling their former importance. The trail therefore combines a walk with a glimpse into the past use of these structures.

A different kind of walk is the GR58 Percurso Dourado stage from Segadães to Sangalhos, which is shaped by the Pateira de Fermentelos. Comparing the two is useful if you are choosing between a circular route and a stage with two named endpoints: the PR7 is a circular route, while the GR58 runs from Segadães to Sangalhos.

Music, Church and Local Cuisine

The Banda Marcial de Fermentelos was founded in 1868 and is based in the freguesia of Fermentelos, in the municipality of Águeda. It is also known as Filarmónica Fermentelense, Banda Velha or “Rambóia”. The Monumento à Música e ao Músico is another local music landmark: the sculptural group, created by Paulo Neves, was installed at Largo da Senhora da Saúde in 2021. It commemorates several generations of musicians from Fermentelos and their music. The founding year and installation date mark different points in local music history.

Fermentelos parish church contains gilded wooden altarpieces from the 16th and 18th centuries. These two centuries add another cultural dimension to the musical monuments. If your trip focuses on local history, you can distinguish between musical commemoration and ecclesiastical heritage.

Local recipes are also part of the area’s cultural attractions: the Confraria da Pateira regularly holds gastronomic gatherings where traditional local recipes are presented. Check the dates before your trip. That way, you can plan around a specific culinary event rather than assuming a date.
