Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge District combines an impressive rocky landscape with a long mining history. Saxon Switzerland National Park is Saxony’s only national park and also Germany’s only national park characterized by rock formations. Here, you can explore a range of themes on your trip: nature, regional history and vibrant culture.

Discover the rocky landscape and nature

In Saxon Switzerland, hiking trails range from wide, well-maintained paths to narrow, adventurous trails. Stairs, ladders, stepped climbs and viewpoints feature along some of these routes. The type of path you choose makes a noticeable difference to the character of your hike; local restrictions may change.

Nature also plays a major role beyond the trails: the district currently has 16 protected landscape areas covering a total of 97,200 hectares. That is about 59 percent of the district’s area. If you add a visit to the Osterzgebirge Wildlife Park to your trip, you can see native wildlife such as fallow deer, red deer and ibex, lynxes, wildcats and raccoons on a walk. The naturalistic setting is also home to non-native animals, including cotton-top tamarins, coatis, meerkats, Asian small-clawed otters and Bennett’s wallabies. The animal populations may change.

Mining history and culture

Altenberg Mining Museum offers a comprehensive overview of the 550-year history of tin mining in Altenberg. It began around 1440 and came to an end in 1991, when mining operations were closed. This timeframe gives your museum visit a clear focus: from the start of tin mining to its end.

Königstein Fortress also brings history to life. The fortress plateau features modern exhibitions and interactive stations. Guided tours, hands-on activities and cultural events round out the program. Individual programs may vary; the different formats make the fortress a destination for a range of interests in history and culture.

In the Erzgebirge part of the district, the annual “Specialty Weeks” celebrate the variety of local cuisine. If you’d like to discover regional food culture during your trip, this recurring event offers a distinctive way to experience the Erzgebirge in the district.

Explore on foot, by bike and by local transport

When choosing your route, it’s worth checking how it is intended to be used. The Painters’ Way (Malerweg) is for hiking only and cannot be explored by bicycle or e-bike. The Elbe Cycle Route, by contrast, runs for 40 kilometers through Saxon Switzerland. The two routes offer different ways to experience the region: on foot along the Painters’ Way or by bike through Saxon Switzerland.

Local transport is also relevant when finding your way around the region. Regionalverkehr Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge GmbH (RVSOE) operates more than 250 buses on 95 routes and 10 ferries at 8 ferry crossings. It also operates the Kirnitzschtalbahn tram in Saxon Switzerland. These service figures may change over time; check current connections when planning your specific trip.

The open-air stage and planning your trip

The Felsenbühne Rathen’s repertoire includes Karl May’s Native American plays, fairy tales and well-known operas, performed against a spectacular backdrop. However, the current status is essential when planning a visit: as of September 2026, the Felsenbühne site and access route are temporarily closed due to severe storm damage in the Rathen area; scheduled performances are canceled until further notice. Check the status again before visiting.

Whether you’re planning your trip around nature, mining history, culture or regional cuisine, these themes give you several starting points for choosing where to stay. This way, you can connect your hotel search with the experiences that interest you most in the district.
