Heidenau offers several ways to enjoy a stay: Baroque Garden Großsedlitz, a self-guided historic city walk, and cycling tours through the Western Saxon Switzerland or along the Elbe. Albert-Schwarz-Bad adds swimming and beach sports to the choice. A garden visit, local history and cycling each offer a different focus.
Baroque Garden and Local History
Baroque Garden Großsedlitz, associated with Heidenau, is a formal garden featuring terraced garden areas, original sandstone sculptures, water features and flower beds. It was designed in the French style under Augustus the Strong. The garden brings together landscape design and art, and is also a place to relax.
To reach the garden, you can take the S1 or S2 and then walk uphill for about 20 minutes. Check the latest access information before you set out. Bicycles and scooters are not allowed in the garden; bicycle racks and bicycle luggage lockers are available. If you are cycling, you can take this restriction into account when planning your garden visit.
The self-guided “A Glimpse into Heidenau’s Past” walk offers another way to learn about the town’s history. It covers 30 numbered sites or buildings displaying historical pictures and signs. Unlike a visit to a single garden, this walk takes you to several locations connected with the town’s history. You can explore Heidenau independently, without relying on a guided tour.
Cycling: Long-Distance Route and Tours
For cycle tourists, the Heidenau ferry is part of the Central Germany Route, or D4 Route, a long-distance connection stretching from Aachen to Zittau. The D4 Central Germany Route also reaches Neustadt in Sachsen and the Lusatian Highlands. Separate from this are the cycling tours that run from Heidenau through the Western Saxon Switzerland and along the Elbe. A family-friendly route through the Western Saxon Switzerland offers views of the Elbe.
The Castles Tour can also be identified by its stated destinations: it includes Baroque Garden Großsedlitz and Weesenstein Castle. An important distinction for planning your tour: much of the Castles Tour runs on roads without a separate cycle path. Conditions may change, so check the situation locally before setting out. This allows you to consider the long-distance route, tours from Heidenau and the Castles Tour as distinct cycling options, without treating their routes as the same.
Swimming and Beach Sports at Albert-Schwarz-Bad
Albert-Schwarz-Bad brings together water, play and sports facilities. Its water area covers 800 m² and includes a paddling pool, a non-swimmers’ pool, a swimmers’ pool, a diving pool and a 70-metre RacerSlide. Swimming programmes range from water familiarisation to advanced swimming. The facilities therefore cater both to beginners and to those developing their swimming skills.
Outside the water, more than 40,000 m² of play and sports areas are available. Three courts are used for beach volleyball, beach handball and beach soccer. Visitors planning a trip to the pool can choose between swimming, swimming lessons and various beach sports. Garden art, a self-guided city walk, cycling tours and a visit to the pool thus offer different ways to spend time in Heidenau.
