A medieval stone cross, a Baroque church and a former quarry tell different stories about Geising. There are also natural areas, a circular hiking trail and a range of activities. When planning your stay, you can choose between local history, nature and outdoor pursuits rather than combining the sights into a fixed route.
Traces of mining and local history
A Baroque post milestone stands at the entrance to the town. The present column is a replica made in 1987 of the original, which was erected in 1734. Another remnant of former mining can be found in the Erdbach valley: the entrance to the Silberstollen (Silver Mine). The German word *Mundloch* refers to the entrance to a mine, making the purpose of the surviving structure clear.
Beside the house at Altenberger StraĂźe 4 stands a stone cross that was recovered from a stream. A knife or curved sword is carved into the stone. This motif suggests that the cross was erected as atonement for an act of violence; this remains a cautious interpretation, not an established certainty.
The geology is also visible on Geisingberg. The massive basalt columns in the former quarry reveal the area’s volcanic origins. The Geisingberg nature reserve brings exceptional biological diversity together in a small area. Geology and nature conservation thus offer two different ways to explore this landscape.
Church and art from different eras
Geising Church was rebuilt in 1689 as a simple Baroque hall church. Its features include three tiers of galleries and a Gothic winged altarpiece from the previous church. The altarpiece dates to around 1530. The building thus brings together different periods of architecture and art: the Baroque church and an older work of art from the previous church building.
Together with the post milestone and stone cross, these sites represent different ways of commemorating the past: a monument to transport, a sacred space, and a cross with an inherited interpretation, expressed with due caution. If you are particularly interested in local history, you can make these landmarks a focus of your stay.
Activities on the water, at the wildlife park and on the ice
Hüttenteich natural swimming lake has a swimming area and a non-swimming area, as well as a wave water slide. Other facilities include sunbathing lawns, a children’s playground and sports facilities. There are also activities beyond swimming: an 18-hole miniature golf course, electric mini boats and rowing boats.
Osterzgebirge Wildlife Park is located on the grounds of Hartmannmühle between Lauenstein and Geising. On a walk there, you can see fallow deer, red deer and mouflon, as well as lynxes and wildcats, in a natural setting. The park also has a large playground with a climbing castle. At Geising’s Gründelstadion, you can go ice skating and play ice hockey.
The activities are clearly distinct: HĂĽttenteich focuses on water and a range of leisure activities, the wildlife park on animal watching and its playground, and GrĂĽndelstadion on ice skating and ice hockey. These differences can help you decide what to focus on during your visit, based on your interests.
Circular hiking trail and the Geisingberg area
The 10.53-kilometre circular hiking trail around Geising starts and ends at the Geising railway bridge. It follows a historic educational trail and passes Löwenhainer Höhe, the Anton Günther monument, Kohlhaukuppe, Aschergraben and the historic Geising bobsleigh track. There are panoramic views along the way. The trail’s length and named stops give you a clear idea of what the route includes.
The Geisingberg area can be reached from Geising railway station or HartmannmĂĽhle; from the valley, the route climbs steeply uphill. Geising railway station and Geisingberg itself are also important stops on the Erzgebirge-Vogtland ridge trail. This gives you two distinct hiking options: a circular trail around Geising and two stops on the longer-distance ridge trail.
Geising offers several clearly distinct options to consider when planning your trip: historic landmarks in town, nature on Geisingberg and activities at individual facilities. Which ones you focus on depends on whether you prefer culture, landscapes or specific leisure activities.
