Bahretal can be explored through several distinct highlights: Ottendorf is known for its historic church art, Borna for its lime history, and Cottaer Busch for its signposted trails and sandstone formations. Bahretal lies on the edge of Saxon Switzerland and also within the Osterzgebirge Landscape Conservation Area. This lets you take cultural and nature interests into account side by side when planning your trip.
Hiking Trails and Sandstone
Cottaer Busch has numerous signposted hiking trails. Its sandstone features include the Gersdorf Ruin, the Mühlsteinbruch quarry, the Felsenbrücken rock bridges, the Steinerne Pilz rock formation, the Zehistaer Wände cliffs and the Jagdstein. Other prominent elevations in Bahretal’s hiking landscape are Schärfling, Herbstberg, Roter Berg, Mühlberg and Bahreberg. The Bahre is also part of the local landscape: it flows through Bahretal and is fed near Gersdorf by the Gersdorfer Bach, Wingendorfer Bach and Bornaer Bach streams.
Church Art in Ottendorf and Borna
The Ottendorf church is the oldest church in Bahretal and has Romanesque origins. Its chancel frescoes depict apostles and evangelists and date from around 1500. They are accompanied by a carved, three-tiered Renaissance altar by Franz Dittrich the Elder and a donor portrait by Lucas Cranach the Younger. Numerous epitaphs of the von Carlowitz family attest to the church’s role as the family’s burial place. In Borna, the church reflects a different local connection to materials: the marble used for its altar comes from the Borna quarries.
Lime History and Fire Brigade Museum
Borna also brings the region’s lime history into focus. The Museum of the Historic Lime Kiln documents regional lime production and centers on a protected lime kiln that is more than 200 years old. The Museum of the Historic Borna Lime Works documents a lime industry in the Elbtalschiefergebirge that operated for more than 600 years. The lime kiln site also includes a fire brigade museum presenting the history of the local fire brigade since 1878.
A six-kilometer lime kiln circular trail passes old quarries, historic firing sites and information stations. The Lime Kiln Museum also has a small field railway that runs on a 300-meter circular track. Operating dates may vary; check them before planning a specific visit.
Equestrian Activities and the Gersdorf Village Festival
In Gersdorf, a riding stable adds an activity with a clear focus: it specializes in show jumping and offers training for competitive riding. If you plan to include this activity in your itinerary, check booking details in advance, as they may change. The Gersdorf village festival has been held annually since 1967 and is associated with the volunteer fire brigade’s bird-shooting competition. Check the current festival dates separately.
When looking for accommodation, you can choose according to the purpose of your trip: the church art in Ottendorf and the lime history in Borna offer cultural discoveries, while Cottaer Busch and the lime kiln circular trail are suited to hiking. If the field railway or village festival determines your dates, plan around the latest operating or festival dates.
