The Bastei combines a stay in Lohmen with impressive views across the Elbe Valley and a distinctive architectural history. From Lohmen, you can reach it on foot or by car via BasteistraĂźe. If views and sandstone heritage are the focus of your trip, you can specifically consider Lohmen as a place to search for a hotel. Historic buildings add different facets of cultural history to this focus.
Bastei: Views and Historic Bridge
From the Bastei, the panorama stretches across the Elbe Valley to the sandstone table mountains, the Elbe and Königstein Fortress. The historic sandstone bridge, with its seven arches, leads towards the former Neurathen rock castle. This places a visit to the Bastei between scenic views and architectural history: the panorama and the bridge appeal to two different interests without requiring you to change destinations.
Lohmen Church and Castle
Lohmen Church is an octagonal Baroque central-plan building made of sandstone, constructed between 1786 and 1789. Its protected interior houses an organ created by Johann Christian Kayser in 1789. The church thus combines a clear geometric form with a protected interior whose organ provides a specific musical connection.
Lohmen Castle has a history spanning more than 500 years. Its restored castle wing now houses the municipal office and library; visitors can view it during the municipal office’s opening hours. Visits are limited to these opening hours: check them before your visit and plan your trip inside accordingly.
The church and castle offer two different approaches to cultural history: sacred architecture with a protected interior on one side, and a restored castle wing with a present-day municipal use on the other.
A Monument on the Painters’ Way
The Richard Wagner Monument stands in Liebethaler Grund, on the first stage of the Painters’ Way. Richard Guhr created the 12.5-metre-high bronze monument, erected in 1933; it is a cultural monument in a natural setting. The combination of the artist’s name, year of construction and scale sets the monument apart from the historic buildings: here, the focus is on a monumental sculpture in its landscape setting.
In the District: Nature and Cultural History
In the wider destination of the Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district, the view extends beyond Lohmen. Saxon Switzerland National Park is the only national park in Saxony and Germany’s only national park of rocky terrain. On the fortress plateau of Königstein Fortress, modern exhibitions and interactive stations present its history; guided tours, hands-on activities and cultural events complement the offerings, although individual programmes vary. The Altenberg Mining Museum offers a different historical perspective: it provides a comprehensive overview of 550 years of Altenberg tin mining, which began around 1440 and ended in 1991 when mining ceased. In the district, nature and industrial history are distinct themes alongside Lohmen’s buildings and cultural monuments. They offer a different perspective if, when planning your trip, you want to consider landscapes or mining history as well as architecture.
