Dohna lies between Dresden, Saxon Switzerland and the Eastern Ore Mountains. Two main attractions shape the options for a stay: walks along the circular trails in the SpargrĂĽnde and the history of the castles, archaeological sites and church. This lets you decide whether to focus your trip more on nature and geology or on historical heritage.

Circular Trails and Geological Features

The Spargründe has a short and a long circular hiking trail. The nature reserve encompasses streams and deciduous forest; some of its ground vegetation is protected, and its birdlife is described as abundant. The rocky hilltops offer views over the castle and the town of Dohna. Trails, woodland and viewpoints provide a distinct nature-focused option alongside the town’s historical attractions.

Another geological landmark is the Kahlbusch. This natural monument is a volcanic rhyolite dome that rises about 45 metres above Dohna. The Kahlbusch also has depressions up to six metres deep, which are considered fossil-bearing sites. These geological features add a different perspective on the landscape to the walking opportunities in the SpargrĂĽnde.

Castles and Archaeological History

In the Middle Ages, Dohna’s castles were among the most significant castles in the Margraviate of Meissen. The castle sites of Burgberg and Robisch also have protected archaeological status: they have been listed since 1935. The castles’ historical significance and the sites’ protected status offer two distinct ways to explore Dohna’s past—the former places the castles in their medieval context, while the latter identifies their archaeological protection status.

St. Mary’s Church and Local History Museum

The Church of St. Mary in Dohna is a three-aisled late Gothic hall church, consecrated in 1489. Inside is a late Gothic winged altarpiece dating from 1518. Visits and guided tours can be arranged through the Dohna parish office; contact them before your trip to arrange a visit. Step-free access has been available since 2009.

The Dohna Local History Museum offers guided visits to its permanent and special exhibitions, as well as town tours of the old town, the church and the castle. These tours must also be arranged in advance. Visitors interested in the town can choose between an exhibition visit and a guided look at several historical topics, rather than treating the different offerings as equivalent sightseeing options.

Another historical detail is the Butchers’ Fountain: the bronze fountain is 4.5 metres tall and was inaugurated in 1912. Together with the church, castles and museum, it adds a single monument to the town’s cultural history.

Getting There and Planning Your Stay

For road travel to Dohna, consider the S 178 state road through the MĂĽglitz Valley or the A 17, exiting at Pirna. In the surrounding area, regional train RB 72 connects Heidenau with GlashĂĽtte and Altenberg; the route is known as the MĂĽglitztalbahn. Check the timetable before travelling if you plan to include the train in your itinerary.

The regional train timetable is also a separate planning consideration for excursions. This keeps the town’s cultural and natural attractions separate from the practical arrangements for getting around and finding accommodation.
