Kuckuckstein Castle stands on a steep rocky spur above the Seidewitz Valley. Its architecture and history are a cultural highlight in Liebstadt, while the southern circular trail through higher terrain offers a different way to experience the landscape.
Kuckuckstein Castle: Architecture and History
Kuckuckstein Castle is considered Liebstadt’s main visitor attraction. Its tower is 37 metres high, and the walls are up to four metres thick. The complex combines medieval architecture with Neo-Gothic elements.
Its history includes Napoleon I’s nighttime visit on 9 September 1813. Freemasonry, the “Zu den drei Schwertern” lodge and the expropriation in the 20th century are also part of the castle’s history. In 2021, Kuckuckstein Castle was recognised as a cultural monument of national importance; the historic Carlowitz Library returned there in 2022.
On selected Sundays, you can visit the castle and exhibition as part of guided tours and cultural events. If you are travelling to Liebstadt for this, check the dates in advance. On visitor days, there is also a small café offering homemade items; opening and selection may vary.
Hiking through the Liebstadt Landscape
The southern circular trail crosses higher terrain and offers recurring long-distance views across the foothills of the Eastern Ore Mountains. The Liebstadt area is characterised by scenic valleys and densely forested mountains. Unlike a visit to the castle, the circular trail focuses on the route and the landscape. Trail conditions and views can change, so check current conditions before setting out.
For planning purposes, the two options are easy to distinguish: selected Sundays are key for a castle visit, while the circular trail depends on trail conditions and the views. This lets you decide which activity you want to shape your stay, without having to combine both activities into a fixed itinerary.
Regional Products from Liebstadt-Döbra
The Spindlerhof farm shop in Liebstadt-Döbra sells produce grown and made on the farm, as well as products from other producers. Its selection includes regional products and seasonal goods available for collection once availability has been confirmed. If you plan to shop there, schedule collection according to confirmed availability.
Taking the Bus to the Castle
Bus route 204 goes to the Liebstadt Markt stop; from there, it is about an eight-minute walk to the castle. This walking time is approximate. Timetable details can change, so check your connection before travelling.
Planning Your Stay
Different conditions apply when planning your visit: the castle and exhibition can be visited on selected Sundays as part of guided tours and events, the circular trail depends on current trail conditions, and collection from Spindlerhof depends on confirmed product availability. Check each of these according to your plans. When looking for a hotel in Liebstadt, your preferred visit dates and activities can help determine the timing of your stay.
