Since 6 July 2019, Dippoldiswalde has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Erzgebirge/Krušnohořà Mining Region. You can encounter mining history at several places: MiBERZ showcases early silver-mining technologies, the mining trail leads through the medieval mining town, and LOHGERBER is dedicated, among other things, to tanning. The Dippoldiswalder Heath and the Malter Reservoir lie around the town. This means cultural history and nature offer distinct focal points for a stay.
Mining Heritage in the Castle and Town
MiBERZ is housed in Dippoldiswalde Castle. Exhibitions in six vaulted rooms explain early technologies for mining and processing silver ore. They focus both on extracting the ore and on processing it—two aspects that together give a concrete picture of early silver-mining technologies.
The LOHGERBER MUSEUM & GALERIE Dippoldiswalde is located in a tannery built around 1750. The protected complex also includes a Baroque house and a faithfully reconstructed three-storey tannery workshop. The permanent exhibitions cover tanning and the leather industry, local history, and the visual arts of the eastern Ore Mountains. Compared with MiBERZ, LOHGERBER takes a different approach: here, craftsmanship, urban history, and regional art take centre stage.
The mining exhibition in Dippoldiswalde also makes use of numerous media stations and virtual reality. Digital forms of interpretation are therefore also part of how the town’s mining heritage is presented.
The Mining Trail
The mining trail is a circular route through Dippoldiswalde’s medieval mining town. Its seven stops are linked to archaeological research. Mining history can therefore be explored not only in the castle and museum, but also along a route through the town. Visitors interested in the archaeological side of local history will find a different approach here than in the exhibitions.
Between the Heath and the Malter Reservoir
Dippoldiswalde lies at the foot of the eastern Ore Mountains, between Dresden and Altenberg. The town is surrounded by the Dippoldiswalder Heath landscape conservation area and the Malter Reservoir. The heath has marked hiking trails. This adds a natural setting to the town’s history, while the trails in the heath offer a different focus from the historic sites in town.
The nearby Malter Reservoir is a recreational area with an adventure pool, swimming spots, camping, boat hire, mini golf, beach volleyball, tennis courts, restaurants, and cafés. The range of activities extends from swimming and boat hire to sports and dining. Facilities and activities may change over time; check what is currently available before travelling.
Travelling on the WeiĂźeritztal Railway
The WeiĂźeritztal Railway has a station in Dippoldiswalde; there are a small number of parking spaces at the station. If you need a parking space, check current availability before travelling. Bicycles can be carried in the baggage car on the WeiĂźeritztal Railway. As carriage conditions may also change, check the current rules before your journey.
