Hohnstein combines a castle perched high on a rocky outcrop with the Elbe Sandstone landscape of forests, rocks and historic walls. The different themes found here include local history, puppetry tradition and nature trails. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering whether you would like to focus more on culture or the outdoors—or combine both.
When choosing accommodation for a stay in Hohnstein, this balance can help: consider which destinations you want to make the focus of your days.
Lanes, Castle and Views
In the historic center, winding lanes and half-timbered houses shape the townscape. Above them, Hohnstein Castle rises on a high rocky outcrop above the town and the Polenztal valley. The castle has an observation tower, a castle garden, a museum and historic cellars. This brings together the striking location above the valley and various aspects of the castle complex.
The Napoleonschanze offers a different perspective on the region. It stands on the 392-meter-high granite summit of Schanzenberg and affords sweeping panoramic views. While the castle rises above Hohnstein and the Polenztal valley, the Napoleonschanze’s distinctive features are its summit location and views across the surrounding area.
Rocks and Trails
The Gautschgrotte is about a 15-minute walk from Hohnstein Market Square. Its rock rim is 18 meters high; in frosty winters, a large column of ice can form at the waterfall. This makes the grotto a natural attraction with a distinctive seasonal aspect: the ice column is a possible occurrence in freezing conditions, not a year-round feature.
The disused narrow-gauge railway through the Schwarzbachtal valley offers a trail of its own. Its former route is now a hiking trail; surviving bridges, tunnels and track remains recall its past use as a railway line. The Hohnstein nature trail is different: it starts at the castle. If you are planning hikes, check current trail conditions in advance.
Kasper Tradition, Museum and Theatre
The Hohnstein Kasper Trail celebrates the town’s puppetry tradition and comprises eight stops featuring Kasper puppet heads. Its theme is clearly defined: the focus is on the local Kasper tradition. The castle museum has a broader focus, with exhibitions on local and regional history, geology, flora and fauna. Exhibitions may change, so bear this in mind when planning your visit.
The Max Jacob Theatre Hohnstein also adds to the town’s cultural offerings. The program includes puppet theatre, cabaret, theatre for adults, concerts, talks and readings. Individual events may change. The theatre is served by bus routes 235, 236, 237 and 254; from the Hohnstein Eiche stop, the walk takes about ten minutes. Check the timetables before setting off.
