In Stolpen, castle history and striking traces of basalt meet routes through the old town and surrounding area. You can combine the sights with a short walk; for longer explorations, there is also a cycling loop of around 23 kilometres and a network of hiking trails to choose from. This lets you tailor your stay to your time and interests, without having to fit every stop into the same day.

Castle, Old Town and Stolpen’s History

Stolpen Castle was first mentioned in 1222. Anna Constantia, Countess of Cosel, is also part of the town’s history: she spent almost half a century behind the castle walls, until her death. In the historic centre, there is more to discover than the castle. Highlights include the restored market arcade, the steep market square, historic Dresdner Straße and the town church. The town museum offers insights into the town’s development.

To connect these stops on foot, you can follow the signposted historical and natural history route. It starts at the town museum, runs across the market square and through historic streets to the castle, and features information panels. Allow about an hour for the route. This is a different way to explore from the Mäusesafari town game, in which you search the town centre for hidden wrought-iron mice, each with its own story and riddle. The three routes take between about one and two hours. Check in advance whether game materials are available.

Basalt as a Geological Feature

Stolpen basalt formed around 25 million years ago, when a volcanic vent broke through the Earth’s crust and the rock solidified into striking columns. The basalt vent of Stolpen Castle Hill was recognised as a National Geotope in 2006. Another striking feature is the basalt well at the castle: it is more than 84 metres deep and is considered the deepest unlined basalt well in the world.

In the castle cellar, the permanent exhibition “Basalt Is a Saxon” explores the history and study of Stolpen basalt. Check before your visit whether the exhibition is open. If you want to learn more about the rock’s history, you can connect its geological origins with the striking basalt formations and the well.

Cycling Loop, Hiking Trails and Outdoor Pool

The Stolpen cycling loop, around 23 kilometres long, passes through Lauterbach, Langenwolmsdorf, Altstadt and Rennersdorf-Neudörfel. It follows a steady succession of climbs and descents and offers scenic views. Information panels, shelters and rest areas are located along the route. The repeated climbs and descents are useful to consider when planning how much time to allow; for navigation, also check the current signs.

There is a well-marked network of hiking trails. The routes pass historic sights and offer views of Saxon Switzerland. Individual trails and their signposting may change, so it is worth checking current route information before setting out. As a weather-dependent option in the warmer months, there is the Stadtbad Stolpen outdoor pool. Its opening depends on the weather, so take this into account when planning your visit by season.

Crafts, Organs and Town Life

Stolpen offers a variety of cultural experiences beyond the castle and trails. The Herbrig Organ Route starts in Stolpen-Altstadt and leads to nine churches where Herbrig organs have been preserved. Landgut Lietze combines craft demonstrations, food and drink, culture and museum exhibitions. As opening arrangements may change, check before your visit which offerings are accessible.

At the market, the show dairy makes soft cheese from raw milk; its courses are open to everyone. Course availability may change, so it is advisable to check what is currently on offer. The annual town festival takes place in early June and brings together craft traditions, food and drink, music and games. If the festival is important to your travel dates, check the latest dates and programme.
