Kleinhennersdorf sits on a plateau 170 to 270 meters above the Elbe Valley, offering wide views of the mountains of Saxon Switzerland and Bohemian Switzerland. The caves at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, marked hiking trails and cultural offerings provide different highlights for a stay. The elevated location and views are complemented by the caves and their history.
Caves and Hiking Trails
Lichterhöhle is the largest cave at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein. It measures 20 meters long and 15 meters wide and was used for sandstone extraction. Sand-Hampel-Höhle also reflects the history of sand mining: it was named after Friedrich Herrmann Hempel of Königstein, who began mining there.
The “Tour for Little Cave Explorers” follows a red-marked trail toward Kleinhennersdorf, then branches off to the caves at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein. It is 4.48 kilometers long and rated moderate. A small path with sandy sections and a few steps leads to the caves. Due to significant erosion damage, please stay on the paths. For getting there, the route description lists buses 244b from Königstein and 244a from Bad Schandau National Park Station to the Papstdorf/Gasthaus “Zur Hoffnung” stop as connections to the starting point of the cave hike; check the current timetable for your travel date before setting out.
Stage 7 of the Forststeig trail also passes over Kleinhennersdorfer Stein, where you can discover various caves. The National Park Guides’ 2026 program also lists the guided hike “On the Way to Scheuersand.” It includes easy, safe climbing and exploring rock caves with flashlights at Kleinhennersdorfer Stein. Booking is required for this guided hike. This gives you a choice of different ways to explore the caves: a hike with a specified distance and difficulty level, or a bookable guided experience involving climbing and flashlights.
Culture, Wildlife Watching and a Bike Tour
Since 2023, Heymannbaude in Kleinhennersdorf has served as a rural meeting place and center for the performing arts. Its year-round program includes performing arts classes, workshops, events and small festivals. Individual offerings may change, so check the relevant program if you are planning to attend a particular event.
At the Kleinhennersdorf wildlife enclosure, you can observe fallow deer in a natural setting. The enclosure is right beside a hiking trail. There is also a small wooden railway for children to play on.
For a cycling option, the municipal Kohlbornstein Tour is a 15-kilometer loop. It passes through Papstdorf and Kleinhennersdorf before returning to Kurort Gohrisch. Some sections can be challenging because of the erosion landscape’s topography. Bear this in mind when choosing your route.
