Bannewitz can be explored through two different discoveries: the view from the Babisnau Poplar and traces of a long local history. There are also official hiking routes and a former railway line that is now used as a cycling and hiking trail. When planning your visit, you can choose between a scenic walk, historic sights, and routes for walking or cycling.
Hiking to the Babisnau Poplar
The Babisnau Poplar in the Bannewitz district of Golberode is a hiking destination, viewpoint and protected natural monument. It is a rare black poplar; there are fewer than 200 specimens of this species in Saxony. It has been protected since 1937. The viewpoint therefore combines special botanical and historical significance.
On a clear day, the view stretches across the Elbe Valley and the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to the hills in the direction of Quohrener Kipse, Hermsdorfer Höhe and Wilisch. Visibility depends on the weather. If the view is important to you when choosing a hike, plan on it as a possibility in clear conditions.
One of the official hiking routes runs from Bannewitz via Goldene Höhe and Hänichen to Possendorf Windmill and back to Bannewitz. The official route information lists possible transport connections, suggested refreshment stops, elevation profiles and distances. The routes can be combined. Check the information before your hike, as route details and linked materials may change.
Village Center, Castle and Historic Traces
The Slavic circular village layout is visible around the village square. Nöthnitz Castle, built around 1630, offers a different historical highlight. Johann Joachim Winckelmann worked there from 1748 to 1754. The castle gardens also give an impression of different design styles: some are landscaped, while others are formal. Visits to the castle are possible on certain event days; check the dates before planning a visit.
Bannewitz’s history also includes the Eutschütz Mill and the Nöthnitz Brewery. The mill was first mentioned in 1486; its reconstruction is documented in 1711. The historic Nöthnitz Brewery was founded in 1619, alongside the construction of the manorial tavern in Nöthnitz. Its production at the time included Bohemian- and Munich-style beer, as well as spirits. These details relate to the history of the sites and businesses.
Bannewitz is also connected to a chapter in automotive history: after the First World War, the village became the site of an automobile manufacturing project. The first Pilot 6/22 PS was developed there. Together with the circular village layout, castle, mill and brewery, this presents a varied picture of local history.
Planning Hiking and Cycling Routes
In addition to the official hiking routes, there is the former route of the Windbergbahn. Today, the section between Neucunnersdorf and Possendorf serves as a cycling and hiking trail. Bannewitz therefore offers different types of routes: a named hiking route to Possendorf Windmill and a former railway line that can be used both on foot and by bicycle. These are described as different options; this does not imply a connection between the routes.
Bannewitz is considered to have good access to the A17; Dresden city center is described as reachable in just a few minutes. This brief travel-time estimate depends on traffic and is therefore only a rough guide. Take traffic conditions into account when planning your trip. For hikes, the municipal route information provides additional details on distances, elevation profiles and possible transport connections.
