Red porphyry, a mineral exhibition featuring more than 3,500 objects, and a descent by hoist into a mine: in Central Saxony, you can encounter geological features, collections and mining history in many different ways. There are also castles, seasonal offerings and recurring events. When planning your trip, you can decide whether you would most like to discover the landscape, culture or the world underground.
Porphyry, Trails and Winter Sports
Rochlitz Hill, 353 metres high, is a remnant of volcanic activity. Its red porphyry tuff is unique in Germany and Europe. The elevation, volcanic origin and distinctive rock give this place a special geological character. The Porphyrland Geopark also invites visitors to hike and cycle. The Mulde Cycle Route, which crosses the Central Saxony district, offers another way to explore the region. In the ridge area of the Ore Mountains in Central Saxony, there are excellently groomed ski slopes and cross-country trails—a distinctive option for winter activities.
Castles and Collections
In Freiberg, the terra mineralia exhibition at Freudenstein Castle presents more than 3,500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites. The three groups of objects offer different perspectives on the exhibition. Rochsburg Castle has housed a museum since 1911. Its “People Make Clothes” exhibition features 52 costumes spanning 1,000 years of European fashion history, making historical change its central theme. Lichtenwalde Castle and Park now display objects from other cultures, as well as porcelain, lacquerwork, furniture and silk embroidery. In Central Saxony, very different approaches to collecting and presenting objects can therefore be found side by side.
The castles also each have a distinct focus: Rochlitz Castle offers guided, immersive experiences through which visitors can learn about the history of the castle and its residents over several centuries. Augustusburg Castle houses a motorcycle museum. Visitors interested in history can choose between guided interpretation, fashion history, decorative arts exhibits and a museum devoted to motorcycles.
Mining Underground and Experiences on the Water
Underground tours at the “Reiche Zeche” teaching mine begin with a descent by hoist, usually via the “Reiche Zeche” shaft. The hoist cage reaches the pit bottom at a depth of around 150 metres. The approximate depth and the descent by hoist give the tour a tangible underground perspective. The experience is different at the “Alte Hoffnung Erbstolln” visitor mine in Schönborn-Dreiwerden, in the municipality of Rossau, where visitors can take a boat underground. Sailing is possible at the Kriebstein Reservoir. These options offer a choice between visiting a mine and enjoying an activity on the water—two very different experiences.
Events and When to Visit
The Central Saxony Cultural Summer is a recurring annual summer festival lasting three months and featuring more than 40 events. The individual programmes vary, so check the relevant event dates when planning your trip. The Historic Settlement Procession also takes place annually in the Striegis Valleys. Both events add their own highlights to the calendar, while the museums, castles and mining experiences cater to other interests.
