In Sayda, architectural history meets a variety of routes through the surrounding area and diverse museum themes. For your planning, you can choose according to your interests: church interiors and local history, technical collections or time outdoors. Some visits require prior arrangements; for seasonal and weather-dependent activities, it is worth checking the current conditions.

History in Churches, Towers and Museums

The town church of Our Lady is a late Gothic hall church. Its tower is 62 metres high, and its furnishings include a Jeheber organ. The interior can be visited by prior arrangement. The Spittel Museum offers a different perspective on the town’s history: it is housed in a building erected in 1508, one of Sayda’s oldest surviving buildings. Its 17 rooms document the working and living traditions of the Ore Mountains. The collection comprises almost 5,000 objects, which visitors can view and touch.

The history of the fire service can also be traced through specific objects. The Fire Brigade Museum opened in 1998 in the old fire station. Its exhibits include a hand pump dating from the year the fire brigade was founded, 1873, and a motor pump from 1926, described as the fire brigade’s first motor pump. The water tower adds to the picture of the town’s technical architectural history: it was built in 1893/94, stands 25 metres high and is considered both a technical monument and a town landmark. It is currently only possible to view it from the outside; check access before your visit.

The Adam Road Construction Machinery Museum features a fully reconstructed steamroller from 1925. All its parts are original, and the roller is considered unique in Saxony. Museum Cäm3 is dedicated to skiing, technology and history across 800 square metres. Its offerings also include weather-independent biathlon activities such as sprinting and target shooting. If these activities are important to your plans, check their availability before visiting.

The former MittelmĂĽhle grain and oil mill is in the district of Friedebach. A demonstration of how Ore Mountain linseed oil is made can be arranged by telephone in advance. This makes the visit different from the museum collections: the focus here is a traditional production process, and you must arrange a time in advance.

Circular Routes, Picture Panels and a Cycling Route

There are several options for walks and longer excursions, with different distances. Circular routes starting from Sayda range from around 6 to 29 kilometres. Among other places, they pass through Mortelgrund, Kreuztanne and Seiffen, and head towards the Rauschenbach and Fláje reservoirs. In addition, the signposted network of trails around Sayda covers about 80 kilometres. The approximate distances for the circular routes can help you choose a route length; conditions on individual trails may change.

If you would also like to discover artistic motifs while out and about, the Sayda Painters’ Trail features 22 picture panels showing artists’ motifs and related information. The Kammweg 07 trail leads back to Sayda via Kreuztanne, Oberes Vorwerk, the Salt Road and the settling ponds. Along the way, it meets the Blockline cycling route, described as family-friendly. These named stops give this route a specific sequence; check trail signs and conditions before setting out.

Winter Activities Subject to Weather

In winter, Sayda has around 45 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails and a drag lift on the Mortelgrund ski slope. Both activities are weather-dependent. This sets them apart from museum visits and the routes described above, which are not tied to the winter season. If you are planning a trip specifically for cross-country skiing or the ski slope, check conditions in advance. When choosing your stay, you can weigh up architectural and collection history, routes of different lengths and seasonal winter sports.
