A church with a painted coffered ceiling and a 72-kilometre network of hiking trails highlight two different sides of Niederwiesa. The town also has a textile history and other cultural attractions, each with specific details to discover. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth considering whether you would rather focus on art and history or spend time on the hiking trails.

Art, Textile History and Historic Buildings

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Niederwiesa was built in 1898. Its distinctive features include a crucifixion group made of French limestone, a painted coffered ceiling and large stucco figures of the four Evangelists. The stained-glass windows depict Luther and Melanchthon. The church offers a range of details to explore, from its figurative artworks to its ceiling paintings.

In Braunsdorf, the Historic Weaving Mill is housed in a protected former industrial building. In production rooms that have been partly preserved in their original state, you can follow the traditional weaving process from yarn to finished fabric. You can explore the weaving mill independently, join a guided tour or attend a workshop; visitor offerings may vary. The site is especially interesting if you want to learn not only about finished textiles but also how they are made.

Another connection to textile history can be found at Galerie Inselsteig: it hosts changing art exhibitions in an original production room of the former Tannenhauer weaving mill. The exhibitions change over time. Protected historic monuments also include Lichtenwalde Mill and the Mühlgraben Bridge. The listed attractions at Lichtenwalde Palace & Park include reception rooms and a chapel with a Donati organ. The palace treasury museum displays cultural objects from Nepal, Tibet, China, Japan and West Africa. The Baroque park has more than 335 fountains, including the Seven Arts water feature; water features may be seasonal.

Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Views

Niederwiesa has an extensive network of 72 kilometres of hiking trails through woods and meadows. Along the way, you will find shelters, rest areas, benches and viewpoints. The named routes also differ in length: the Zschopau Valley Trail is about 9 kilometres long and offers views, varied flora and places to sit. The “Around the Mühlberg” circular trail is approximately 4.5 kilometres long and leads to a viewpoint overlooking the Zschopau Valley, Braunsdorf, Lichtenwalde and the palace.

The approximately 3-kilometre Teufelsschlucht route descends wooden steps to a plateau with a view of the Zschopau. The roughly 4-kilometre Braunsdorf circular trail reaches the Harrasfelsen rock and the Körner Cross. When choosing a route, you can take both the approximate distance and its destination or views into account. Niederwiesa also has themed song trails. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current status of your chosen route before setting out.

Stay Overnight and Explore More of the Region

For camping, Niederwiesa Natural Swimming Pool offers pitches for long-term campers and short stays in tents. Camping availability may vary by season. When planning your stay, bear this seasonal caveat in mind and check availability for your preferred dates.

The wider destination of Central Saxony has additional cultural and landscape attractions of its own. Rochlitzer Berg, which is 353 metres high, is a remnant of volcanic activity and contains red porphyry tuff, described as unique in Germany and Europe. Rochsburg Castle has housed a museum since 1911; its “People Make Clothes” exhibition displays 52 costumes spanning 1,000 years of European fashion history. The Central Saxony Culture Summer is an annual, three-month summer festival with more than 40 events. The festival returns each year, while individual programmes vary.
