Brand-Erbisdorf brings mining history to life on several levels: on a trail around the town, at historic architectural landmarks, and at Erzengler Pond, which forms part of the historic mining water management system. The mining trail offers nearly 100 sites to explore on foot. Its sections add up to about 40 kilometers. This total length is not the length of a single section. Before setting out, check the conditions of your chosen section, as they can change. For planning, it may help to prioritize: should your stay focus mainly on the trail, the architectural landmarks, or a summer day of swimming?

Brand-Erbisdorf’s Mining Heritage on Foot and in the Townscape

Local mining landmarks include the Buttermilchtor aqueduct, dating from 1821; the Thelersberger Stolln in Linda; and the preserved Zugspitze mining building complex. The complex includes the restored Alte Mordgrube mine house. Another architectural landmark can be found in Langenau: a church contains a sandstone portal from the 15th century, originating from the former Niederlangenau manor and installed after 1945. Its origin and later installation mark two different phases in the history of the same architectural feature. Access to individual sites may vary.

Erzengler Pond: Seasonal Recreation

Erzengler Pond is a bathing pond in a forest in Brand-Erbisdorf and also forms part of the historic mining water management system. In summer, it offers opportunities for swimming and recreation; swimming is seasonal. The local highlights therefore differ: the trail leads on foot past mining sites, while summer activities are the main focus at the pond. When planning, consider which of these options best suits your stay.

Mittelsachsen as a Broader Travel Destination

The broader travel destination of Mittelsachsen offers additional, distinct attractions. Rochlitzer Berg, at 353 meters high, is a remnant of volcanic activity. The red porphyry tuff is described as unique in Germany and Europe. In Freiberg, the terra mineralia exhibition at Freudenstein Castle showcases more than 3,500 minerals, gemstones, and meteorites.

Mining experiences in Mittelsachsen also vary in form. During underground tours at the “Reiche Zeche” teaching mine, the visit begins with a shaft ride, usually down the “Reiche Zeche” shaft; the hoisting cage reaches the landing at a depth of around 150 meters. The “Alte Hoffnung Erbstolln” visitor mine in Schönborn-Dreiwerden, in the municipality of Rossau, offers a different way to go underground: visitors travel by boat.

Rochsburg Castle has housed a museum since 1911. Its “People Make Clothes” exhibition displays 52 costumes spanning 1,000 years of European fashion history. Rochlitz Castle offers guided experiences where you can learn about the castle’s history and its residents over several centuries. The castle is not fully accessible to visitors with mobility impairments; however, some highlights can be explored with only a few steps.

Mittelsächsischer Kultursommer is also part of the broader travel destination of Mittelsachsen: a three-month summer festival held annually, featuring more than 40 events. The individual programs vary.
