In Lunzenau, a variety of discoveries lie close together: at Heinrich Heine Park, you’ll find paths, old trees and historic features; in the town center, houses, the church and the local history museum tell the story of the town. Hiking and cycling trails also offer different ways to explore the surrounding area.

Parkland and Views

Heinrich Heine Park was laid out between 1873 and 1877 for factory owner Wilhelm Vogel and covers about 36.6 hectares. Its distinctive collection of trees includes rare, partly exotic species and a beech tree more than 200 years old. The park’s paths offer places to rest and relax. An artificial ruin and a tunnel were also built on a rocky outcrop above the Zwickauer Mulde.

Those looking for views over Lunzenau can choose between two different vantage points. Max Vogler Park lies on a hill near the market square and offers a good overview of the town. At 276.3 meters above sea level, Biesig is Lunzenau’s highest point. From there, the view extends to Schloss Rochsburg, the Göhren Bridge, Chemnitz, Schloss Augustusburg and the Ore Mountains, among other places. The park and the elevated location offer different perspectives: a path through a landscaped setting in one, and views beyond the town in the other.

Discover the Town’s History on Foot

A stroll through the town center takes you along narrow lanes past townhouses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Prinz Lieschen Fountain, built in 1997, stands in the market square. It depicts the town’s coat of arms and the incorporated districts, together with their founding dates.

The local history museum is one of Lunzenau’s oldest houses and survived the town fire of 1781. The museum focuses on former small-town bourgeois life. Its weaving room features a fully functional handloom, and there is an oven in the outdoor area. St. James’ Church offers a different perspective on the past: it was built between 1787 and 1789 on the site of a previous church dating back to around 1325. The church’s organ dates from 1793.

Railway history is also part of Lunzenau’s cultural offerings. The Railway Museum presents changing exhibitions in a former station building that has been relocated. Its railway-related exhibits and features include a shunting locomotive. The town’s historical attractions thus cover different topics: the local history museum focuses on everyday life in the past, while the Railway Museum combines railway history with changing exhibitions.

Hiking and Cycling Trails around Lunzenau

The Bilz Circular Hiking Trail starts at the market square, passes through Heinrich Heine Park toward Rochsburg and returns to Lunzenau’s market square. Signs along the entire route help with navigation. As trail conditions and signage may change, it is a good idea to check the current route before setting out. When planning your trip, this loop is an alternative to a stroll through the town center: it connects the market square with the park and continues toward Rochsburg.

The Mulde Cycle Path adds a cycling route that runs through Lunzenau and the Rochlitz Mulde Valley. Attractions along the Lunzenau section include Heinrich Heine Park and the local history museum. The Via Porphyria also has clearly defined stage distances: one 12-kilometer stage runs from Penig to Lunzenau, and a 15-kilometer stage continues from Lunzenau to ClauĂźnitz. The second stage is therefore three kilometers longer. The Via Porphyria as a whole is an approximately 200-kilometer circular route through the valleys of the Mulde and Chemnitz, the Kohrener Land and the southern Leipzig region.

The variety of trails makes Lunzenau appealing to travelers with different interests: a walk takes in the lanes and houses, the Bilz Trail connects the market square and the park, and the cycling and long-distance hiking routes place the town within a wider network of trails. When choosing a destination, you can decide whether you’re more interested in local history, parkland or a stage on foot or by bike.
