Town Hall views from 37.5 metres, guided tours at Kellerberg and the Luther Trail with Zschopau scenery: Waldheim can be discovered from different perspectives. When choosing your stay, you can consider whether town history, a visit underground, or a route featuring river, forest and architectural heritage should be your focus.

Town history and views over Waldheim

The guided city tours explore different aspects of the town. These include the Old Salt Road, Augustinian monks and the former Waldheim Castle, as well as the influence of Augustus the Strong and the local FLORENA brand. The historical arc thus stretches from roads and monastic history to notable figures and a well-known local brand name.

A separate tour takes you through the town hall. It includes the council chamber, the historic tower clock and an observation platform at a height of 37.5 metres. From there, the view extends over Waldheim and the Zschopau Valley. While the city tours explore various historical topics, the town hall tour places special emphasis on the building and the view. Availability and booking conditions may vary; check them before your visit.

Underground and culinary trails

At Kellerberg, a guided underground tour takes you through Waldheim’s subterranean passageways. These include former serpentine stone workings and protective or refuge passages. The tour connects the underground passages with their former use. If you plan to take this tour, check in advance whether it is being offered.

Another themed tour visits houses with historic brewing rights, recorded for 1771. Richzenhain beer and Fettbemmen (open-faced bread topped with lard) are also part of the tour. Alongside town and architectural history, the focus is therefore also on local culinary history. Booking and serving details may change; enquire about them in advance.

Zschopau scenery along the Luther Trail

The Luther Trail route into Waldheim follows the Zschopau through bird sanctuaries. The route combines river scenery and viewpoints with fields and forest, as well as Gründerzeit architecture, railway viaducts and a former monastery. Natural and cultural landscapes are both in focus: the route description includes open countryside as well as striking buildings and a reminder of the area’s monastic past.

More to discover in Central Saxony

The wider travel destination of Central Saxony also offers its own nature and cultural highlights. Rochlitzer Berg, which rises 353 metres, is a remnant of volcanic activity; its red porphyry tuff is considered unique in Germany and Europe. Rochsburg Castle has housed a museum since 1911. Its “People Make Clothes” exhibition showcases 52 costumes from 1,000 years of European fashion history.

The regional cultural calendar also includes the annual Central Saxony Summer of Culture: the summer festival runs for three months and features more than 40 events. The individual programmes vary. These regional examples broaden the focus beyond Waldheim’s own city tours and landscape themes, without equating them with local offerings.
