Frauenstein brings together the history of organ building, castle ruins and hiking trails that also offer views of the Ore Mountains. This gives you a choice of different ways to spend your stay: a museum and historic organs, a seasonal visit to the castle, or longer walks through the countryside. These options make planning easier without requiring culture and hiking to be part of the same day’s itinerary.

Silbermann, the Castle and Music

The Gottfried Silbermann Museum focuses on the life and work of the organ builder, his family and his musical surroundings. The exhibition also explains the principles of organ building. Its centrepiece is a faithful copy of the Silbermann organ from Etzdorf; the history of Frauenstein is also covered at the museum. The castle ruins and museum are in the town centre, along with small shops.

Frauenstein Castle Ruins date back to around 1200, when the area was settled on behalf of the Margrave of Meissen. They are open to visitors from 1 May to 31 October, weather permitting. Tickets are available at the Gottfried Silbermann Museum. As access is seasonal and weather-dependent, check the visiting period before you arrive. The town’s information centre can arrange guided tours of the museum, the ruins, the town and hiking trails.

Music is also part of the cultural offering: the Gottfried Silbermann Museum, Frauenstein Town Church and Nassau Village Church host concert series featuring international and regional performers. Programmes may change, so check the dates for your travel period. Nassau Village Church, in the Frauenstein district of Nassau, is also home to a Gottfried Silbermann organ dating from 1746 and 1747. It was restored in 1998 and is considered to be very well preserved.

The Frauenstein Castle Association offers themed tours that bring the age of knights and robbers to life. These also feature the castle ghost “Vrouwin” for younger visitors. Tours are subject to the organiser’s availability. Frauenstein and Nassau were confirmed as state-recognised health resorts in 2022.

Castle Park and Hiking Trails

The protected FND Schlosspark Frauenstein area covers about two hectares. It lies 150 metres north of Frauenstein and borders the castle wall. Geologically, the castle park lies at the transition between nutrient-poor granite porphyry and the adjoining gneiss. A natural beech mixed forest has developed there, with sycamore maple, ash and wych elm. Numerous hiking paths cross the area; trail access may change during maintenance or forestry work.

The Silbermann-Frauenstein-Nassau circular trail is listed as 15.6 kilometres long, with a walking time of four hours. It passes the Röthenhübel viewpoint, which offers views of the Ore Mountains; visibility depends on conditions. The circular trail is considered unsuitable for bicycles and pushchairs. As trail conditions and markings can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Another option is the Talsperre-Lichtenberg–Schillermühlenweg circular hike. It leads from Frauenstein via Burkersdorf to the Lichtenberg reservoir pre-dam, then follows nature trails along the Gimmlitz back. No walking time is given here for this route, so plan your hiking day according to current trail conditions and your own schedule. The two circular routes are described differently: the length and walking time are specified for the Silbermann-Frauenstein-Nassau route, while the other route is described by its course to the pre-dam and back.

In the district of Nassau, the fitness trail offers a family-friendly outdoor activity. The condition of the facilities may change due to maintenance or other changes; check before your visit. For a longer day of hiking, the stated walking time for the Silbermann circular trail is an additional planning guide.
