The Forest Discovery Trail and the palace park offer two distinct landscape highlights to consider when planning a trip. The hike focuses on the route and nature stations; the park combines Baroque design with old trees and historic features. Some cultural attractions have their own visiting conditions, which you can take into account when planning your day.

Forest Discovery Trail: circular route with nature themes

The family-friendly Forest Discovery Trail is around 9.5 kilometres long and follows a circular route. It starts and ends at the Mulden car park in Wechselburg; along the way, the route passes over Rochlitzer Berg. Ten information stations explain the local forest, flora and fauna. This means the trail combines a clearly defined route with information about local nature. Check the condition of the path before setting off. Its length, circular layout and nature themes provide concrete points of reference when planning your day; the trail offers a standalone hiking option.

Palace park: Baroque garden landscape

The palace park is a Baroque landscape garden. Some of its trees are around 180 years old; other features include a Lourdes grotto that serves as a place of pilgrimage, as well as historic elements. Winding paths with places to sit shape the grounds. Compared with the Forest Discovery Trail, the focus here is on the garden design, notable trees and historic details. The hiking trail, by contrast, is characterised by its circular route and ten stations about the forest, flora and fauna. These differences can help you decide between a continuous hike and exploring a landscaped park.

Visiting conditions and construction history

The basilica can be visited outside prayer times. Group tours of the church can be arranged by prior appointment from Monday to Saturday. Visitor regulations may change, so check them locally before your arrival; groups should arrange their visit in advance. A specific historical landmark is the Wechselburg Mulde Bridge: it was built from Rochlitz porphyry between 1844 and 1846.

Mittelsachsen as a wider travel destination

The Forest Discovery Trail crosses Rochlitzer Berg. As part of the wider travel destination of Mittelsachsen, the mountain can also be considered from a geological perspective: it is 353 metres high and a remnant of volcanic activity. The red porphyry tuff is described as unique in Germany and Europe. The Mulde Cycle Route, which crosses the district of Mittelsachsen, offers another way to explore the region.

Mittelsachsen also offers distinctive cultural attractions. Rochsburg Castle has housed a museum since 1911. The “Leute machen Kleider” (“People Make Clothes”) exhibition features 52 costumes spanning 1,000 years of European fashion history. In Freiberg, the terra mineralia exhibition at Freudenstein Castle showcases more than 3,500 minerals, gemstones and meteorites. The Mittelsächsischer Kultursommer is an annual three-month summer festival with more than 40 events; individual programmes vary. Check the relevant dates when planning a specific stay.
