In Frankenberg/Saxony, you can explore the town’s history through two different approaches: St. Aegidien Church and the sculpture trail through the old town. Other highlights include an interactive museum, the medieval mining town of Bleiberg, and trails with different route markers. When planning your visit, you can therefore start by choosing between cultural history, technology, and a specific hiking route.

Town History Through Church and Art

The present-day St. Aegidien Church was built in 17 months and consecrated on October 29, 1741. The sculpture trail offers a different way to explore historical themes: this art trail runs through the old town and includes 20 works commemorating historical events and important figures from the town. At the church, the focus is on a building and consecration event that can be precisely dated; the trail explores several local stories through works of art.

Technology and Town History at the ZeitWerkStadt

The ZeitWerkStadt is an experience museum in Frankenberg about major inventions and achievements from Saxony. It is designed as a family-friendly, interactive attraction. The Time Cube is an immersive 360-degree projection. The digital journey through time also explores Frankenberg’s vehicle industry, printing, carpet weaving, and cigar manufacturing. Its themes therefore range from achievements from Saxony to Frankenberg’s own industrial history.

Medieval Life in the Mining Town of Bleiberg

The mining town of Bleiberg shows how the residents of a medieval mining settlement lived and worked in the 13th and 14th centuries. One of the main attractions is a complex of houses built on the basis of archaeological excavations at Treppenhauer. Activities include medieval crafts and pursuits such as baking bread, making mead and herbal tea, and cooking over an open fire. The focus is therefore on everyday life in the settlement and on hands-on insights into medieval activities.

Choose Hiking Trails by Length and Route Features

The Forest Experience Trail is a 4-kilometer loop along easily walkable forest paths and takes about two hours. Its loop format, length, and approximate duration are therefore specified. The Zschopau Valley Trail has different features: the Harrasfelsen–Mittweida section is part of the Frankenberg trail network and follows the Zschopau River through a medieval mining area. On the Sachsenburg–Hainichen Trail, the marking applies only to one section: the section up to the turnoff to Rossauer Forest is part of the Frankenberg trail network and is marked in red. These details offer different points of reference to help you choose—a rough time estimate for the loop, the river and historic surroundings on the Zschopau Valley Trail, and a specific trail marking on the section toward Rossauer Forest.
