The Danube Sinkhole between Immendingen, Möhringen, Tuttlingen and Fridingen changes from day to day: At times, the Danube carries plenty of water; at others, it is completely dry in various places or carries only a little water. This changing phenomenon offers a special view of the landscape of Tuttlingen district. The district covers 734.4 square kilometres and stretches from the southwestern foothills of the Swabian Jura, across parts of the Baar region, to the valley of the Young Danube.
Cliffs, heathland and distinctive landscapes
The northern part of the district is home to juniper heaths and the region of the 10-Tausender: it includes ten mountains that are over 1,000 metres high. White limestone cliffs rise above the Danube Valley. The Danube Gorge and the volcanic crater at Höwenegg are also among the district’s scenic highlights. Different geological formations and landscapes meet here.
The Mühlheim Rock Cave received a special distinction in October 2022: UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb named it the first cave in the Swabian Jura to receive Geopoint status. The Danube Sinkhole, limestone cliffs and volcanic crater each add their own distinctive feature; together, they offer insights into the district’s varied landscape.
Explore on foot and by bike
The “Donauversinkung” premium hiking trail, part of the DonauWellen trails, runs between Tuttlingen-Möhringen and Immendingen. The final section of the Albsteig leads via Rußberg, Bettelmannskeller and Nonnenhöhle near Wurmlingen directly to Tuttlingen. The routes therefore differ in their described sections and destinations. Check current trail conditions before setting out on a hike.
In Tuttlingen-Nendingen, the two-kilometre-long “Rock- & Roll-Tour” is a walking and hiking route that is largely barrier-free and fully wheelchair accessible. Check local conditions before your trip. At Rabenfels in the Bära Valley, the climbing areas between the “Mister Wendl” and “Gebrüderweg” routes are open from 1 August to 31 December. Find out about the applicable regulations before climbing.
For a cycling trip, Mühlheim an der Donau offers a connection to the International Danube Cycle Path: the town lies directly on the route, which runs all the way to the Danube’s mouth at the Black Sea and can also be cycled in short stages. Mühlheim is also part of the Upper Danube Nature Park. Cycling and hiking trails offer different ways to explore the region.
Museums and culture in the district
The Neuhausen ob Eck Open-Air Museum features 25 historic buildings. They were dismantled at their original locations, moved to the present-day museum site and restored to their original condition. The buildings offer a tangible insight into historic architectural styles, without limiting you to individual collection pieces.
The KĂĽnstlerhaus Scharf Eck in Fridingen houses a museum about Hans Bucher, a painter of the Danube Valley. His life and work are displayed across the three upper floors; opening hours vary by season. The Museum Oberes Donautal in Ifflinger Castle has different areas of focus: its permanent exhibitions cover the history of the town and its lordship, archaeology, carnival and more recent history. There are also changing special exhibitions.
Tuttlingen’s Honberg-Sommer is an annual festival held in the ruins of Honberg Castle and attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the event dates. This will help you plan your visit around the cultural programme.
Arena Geisingen offers a 30,000-square-metre outdoor area with a road course, beer garden, slacklining, a beach volleyball court and other activities. As access to specific activities may vary, check what will be available on the date of your visit.
