One of the Danube’s main sinkholes is located near Fridingen, in the middle of the valley and directly on the Danube Cycle Path towards Ziegelhütte. A special information point marks the spot and provides information about the Danube sinkhole. Here, a special natural feature and the route of the cycle path sit side by side. Fridingen is a member of the Upper Danube Nature Park. The Danube Valley, where the town is located, is known as the “Swabian Grand Canyon”—a vivid description of the landscape.
Hiking and cycling in Fridingen
Fridingen has numerous local circular trails through the landscape of the Danube Gorge Valley. One of the featured hiking options is the DonauWelle Donaufelsen-Tour. In July 2026, it was once again certified as a premium hiking trail with the German Hiking Seal. Those focusing on hiking can explore the circular trails and this award-winning route; the Danube Cycle Path is a separate option for a cycling trip. It passes through Fridingen. The Danube sinkhole is located directly along its route towards ZiegelhĂĽtte.
This makes it easy to consider different interests separately when planning a stay: local circular trails and the Donaufelsen-Tour are options for hiking, while the Danube Cycle Path is suited to a cycling trip. It is also worth planning trips by public transport separately: Fridingen can be reached by the Ringzug, regional trains and various bus routes. Check the current timetables for your journey.
Historic town centre and museums
Fridingen’s historic town centre is protected as a historic monument. In the heart of the old town stands the Künstlerhaus Scharf Eck, one of the oldest town houses in the city. The year 1554 is inscribed on its half-timbered gable. The upper floors house a museum dedicated to Hans Bucher (1929–2002), a landscape painter of the Danube Valley. Across three floors, visitors can learn about his life and work.
The Museum Oberes Donautal reopened in Ifflinger Castle in 1987; the local history museum had already been founded in 1974. On the ground floor, in the castle’s former chapel, the museum presents an exhibition about the castles of the Upper Danube Valley. The exhibits also include temporary exhibitions and permanent displays on the history of the town and its rulers, archaeology, carnival and more recent history. While the museum in Scharf Eck is dedicated to the work of a single painter, the Museum Oberes Donautal covers a broader range of topics.
The parish church of St. Martinus also offers a direct connection to art history: its Baroque high altar painting depicts the “Mass of St. Martin”, painted by Matthäus Zehender in 1690. Together with the town houses and museums, it forms part of a route exploring different aspects of Fridingen’s history and culture.
Open-air theatre and local traditions
The Steintäle natural stage is a largely unaltered outdoor theatre in a narrow rocky valley, with 400 seats. The Kulturring Fridingen stages one play for adults and one for children there every year. If a performance is important to your travel plans, check the dates for your preferred period.
The Fridingen Fasnet carnival offers another glimpse into local traditions. It traditionally begins on the morning of “Schmotzige Duschdig” with the release of pupils from school and the fools’ takeover of the town hall. Fasnetkiechle are also part of the carnival: this traditional pastry is made by stretching yeast dough over the knee. The town hall ritual and the pastry’s distinctive preparation each give the Fasnet its own cultural significance.
Winter activities and practical planning
In winter, Antoni ski slope offers downhill runs of varying difficulty. They can be reached by drag lifts and platter lifts; a rope tow is added when ski lessons are in session. Operations and available services depend on conditions and scheduling, so check the latest operating information before a winter trip. The ski hut is staffed by volunteers and offers a place to stop between or after runs; check the current opening hours in advance.
When there is sufficient snow, a club maintains a cross-country ski trail on Kirchberg in Fridingen. This activity is also dependent on a specific condition: snow cover will determine whether it fits your plans. Hiking, cycling, culture and winter activities are all different reasons to consider Fridingen as a travel destination. You can decide which ones should shape your stay based on your travel dates and personal interests.
