Irndorf combines a distinctive landscape with a small, specific selection of nature and cultural experiences. The Rock Garden, Irndorfer Hardt and Eichfelsen each offer something different: plant watching, a vast plateau and a limestone cliff overlooking the Danube Valley. There are also designated circular hiking trails and St. Peter’s Church. When planning your visit, it is worth first deciding whether you mainly want to explore the landscape, go hiking or also learn more about the local church history.
Rock Garden and Eichfelsen
Around 100 plant species can be discovered in the Irndorf Rock Garden without having to enter sensitive areas. The site was created in 1997 and 1998. It is located close to Eichfelsen, so the two local attractions can be considered together thematically without treating them as a single destination.
Eichfelsen is a large limestone cliff with rock faces over 70 metres high. From there, you can look out over the gorge valley of the young Danube. This sets it apart from the Rock Garden: here, rock, cliff faces and views of the valley shape the landscape; there, the focus is on plant species and treating the area with care. Visitors planning to explore nature in Irndorf will find two clearly distinct focal points.
Irndorfer Hardt: plateau and nature reserve
Irndorfer Hardt, also known as Irrendorfer Hardt, is a nature reserve covering around 103 hectares and has been part of the Upper Danube Nature Park since 1992. The almost level, karstified plateau lies northwest of the village of Irndorf and is used as grassland. Thanks to its range of species, the Hardt is an important nature reserve in the Freiburg administrative district. Ground frost is possible there in every month of the year—a special feature that may be worth bearing in mind when planning your visit by season.
The plateau and Eichfelsen offer different landscape impressions: the Hardt is described as almost level terrain, while the limestone walls over 70 metres high stand out at Eichfelsen. This contrast can help you choose the focus of your outing. When walking in the area, take the conditions on the ground into account.
Hiking trails and winter options
Five local circular hiking trails are designated in Irndorf. They range in length from 4.61 kilometres for No. 5 to 16.56 kilometres for No. 1; in between are No. 2 at 5.09 kilometres, No. 3 at 9.74 kilometres and No. 4 at 7.75 kilometres. The figures allow you to compare trail lengths, but on their own say nothing about walking time or difficulty. The Beuron Way of St. James runs from Nusplingen via Bärenthal and Irndorf to Beuron, connecting the village with a longer route.
Another option is the circular route from Eichfelsenhalle towards Eichfelsen and back to the village. It is about 2 kilometres long, cleared and open for walking. As seasonal trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check conditions locally. In winter, there are pre-tracked cross-country ski trails in the landscape around Irndorf for skiers of all ages. Whether they can be used depends on snow and trail conditions, so check them before setting out.
St. Peter’s Church and local culture
St. Peter’s Church also offers specific points of interest for exploring Irndorf’s culture. Its tower is 46 metres high. The furnishings include a Gothic crucifix, a Pietà from the old church, a reliquary shrine for the veneration of the Good Beth of Reute, and a “Mary of Victory.” These named objects give the church a distinct character; together with the Rock Garden and the landscape attractions, they show that Irndorf offers nature and culture side by side.
These different interests can help guide your choice of holiday apartment: would you like to spend most of your time enjoying the landscape and designated trails, or would you also like local culture to be part of your trip? The circular hiking trails vary considerably in length, while the Rock Garden, Eichfelsen and church each offer their own focus.
