Local History and Art in Emmingen
A half-timbered house on HauptstraĂźe, a Neo-Romanesque parish church with older furnishings, and a nine-figure sculpture give Emmingen a distinctive cultural and historical character. Add to that the local carnival, along with opportunities for hiking, cycling and cross-country skiing. These themes bring history and tradition together with activities that vary by season.
Insights into Village Life and Crafts
The local history museum is housed in a renovated half-timbered house on Hauptstraße. On display are a fully furnished home, equipment used for agricultural work in the fields and forests, and tools belonging to former village craftsmen. The exhibition also presents rural village customs and local history. It is devoted to village life in the past—from living and working to customs and local history.
St. Sylvester: Building History in Several Dates
The Catholic parish church of St. Sylvester is Neo-Romanesque and was built in 1842 to plans by building inspector Martin. It includes a tower dating from 1584 and a Baroque high altar from 1688, created by Johann Pölandt of Schongau. A Baroque group of figures depicting the Crucifixion, with Mary and John the Baptist, dates from 1738. St. Sylvester thus combines a Neo-Romanesque church building with a 16th-century tower and Baroque furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Art in the village also makes its own mark. The Schelmenbaum is a twelve-metre-high sculpture by Peter Lenk, created in 2012 at the corner of Engener StraĂźe and EgertenstraĂźe. Some of its nine figures refer to the history of the municipality, while others allude to national politics. Alongside religious art, it is a contemporary work that brings local history and political themes together.
Carnival is also part of Emmingen’s culture. The Buchenberger Zunft Emmingen ab Egg e. V. was founded in 1973 and keeps the long-standing Emmingen carnival alive as a local tradition. Those interested in local culture will find not only buildings and works of art here, but also a tradition that is still celebrated today.
Chapels and Wall Paintings
Near Emmingen, the pilgrimage church of Maria Opferung zu Schenkenberg stands on a former castle hill, close to the road leading into the Wasserburgertal valley. The Zeilenkapelle chapel has wall paintings, some of which date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Emmingen hiking trail includes the Zeilenkapelle and Schenkenbergkapelle chapels. If you are planning to visit the interior, it is best to check access in advance.
Witthoh: Views and Seasonal Activities
From the Witthoh, you can enjoy sweeping views of Lake Ăśberlingen, Lake Radolfzell, the Hegau region and the Black Forest. In winter, a cross-country ski trail is groomed there for both classic and skate skiing. At the Berggasthaus Witthoh, it connects to the Hattingen trail. Those who would like to compare the two styles can try both classic technique and skate skiing on the same trail; before heading out for a winter ski, it is advisable to check the current trail conditions.
The SkihĂĽtte Witthoh offers coffee specialities, a selection of cakes and hearty fare. If you are planning a stop, check in advance whether these options are available on the day of your visit. This allows you to consider the views, winter sports and a possible break as different aspects of the Witthoh, without assuming fixed opening hours or year-round availability.
For cycling enthusiasts, the Emmingen Ski Club’s cycling group is another option: it meets every Wednesday from April to the end of September. The group rides mountain bikes, road bikes and touring bikes.
There are several different ways to plan your visit: local history and art, living traditions, or activities on the Witthoh. The seasonal information helps you plan around the cycling group and cross-country skiing; for the chapels and the ski hut, it is worth checking the specific visiting conditions.
