Rietheim-Weilheim combines peaceful places for reflection and historic buildings with hiking trails through meadows, forests and valleys. In winter conditions, cross-country skiing on the RuĂźberg is another option. The choices range from a leisurely stroll along the Faulenbach to longer hikes and winter sports.

Chapels and Historic Buildings

The Maria-Hilf Chapel in Weilheim is a popular destination for many worshippers and invites visitors to pause for quiet reflection. It was consecrated in 1856 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Weilheim parish. In Rietheim, the historic castle features the Wiederhold coat of arms above its portal. The chapel and castle offer different ways to learn about the history of the two districts.

The tower of the Sylvester Chapel is an older trace of the past: the dilapidated chapel, built around 1000, was demolished in 1835, but its tower remained standing. The Altrietheim ruins, the remains of a castle in the municipality of Rietheim-Weilheim, are another historic site. Weilheim’s Historic Town Hall was renovated in keeping with heritage preservation standards in 2009 to preserve the historic building.

Hikes and Leisurely Walks

Eight well-marked hiking trails lead through meadows, forests and valleys in Rietheim-Weilheim. For navigation, a printed booklet featuring eight recommended circular hikes is available at the town hall in Rietheim. If you’re looking for a more leisurely stroll, there is a footpath along the renaturalized Faulenbach, suitable for a relaxed walk. You can cool your feet in the stream along the way.

Natural attractions to discover while hiking include the Bettelmannskeller cave. The former Fürstenstein Castle is also a hiking destination, offering wonderful views over the valley. The Rußberg is home to the district’s flat upland plateau, a popular local recreation area, especially for hikers and cross-country skiers.

Cross-Country Skiing and Winter Sports on the RuĂźberg

In winter conditions, you can cross-country ski on the approximately 12.5-kilometer Deutsche Bank trail on the RuĂźberg. It connects to an extensive network of trails covering nearly 70 kilometers. The named trail and the wider network provide a choice of different distances, without prescribing a particular route.

The Alter Garten ski slope, with a ski lift and floodlighting, is also located between the hamlets of Bulzingen and LupbĂĽhl in Rietheim. The cross-country ski trail and ski slope complement the hiking and walking options with dedicated winter activities. The district of Rietheim is also home to a large fire-water pond with an ecological zone and local recreation area.

Getting Around and Excursions

Rietheim-Weilheim can be reached by bus from various directions. There is a bus stop on BahnhofstraĂźe in Rietheim and another in Weilheim at the corner of KirchstraĂźe and JahnstraĂźe. This means that bus stops are available in both districts.

Rietheim-Weilheim is considered an excellent starting point for excursions to the nearby Danube Valley, Lake Constance, the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura. When choosing where to stay, you can take your cue from the area’s highlights: chapels and historic buildings, walks and hikes or—when winter conditions allow—cross-country skiing and the ski slope.
