Klippeneck shapes the landscape around Denkingen: The plateau lies on the edge of the Swabian Alb between Tuttlingen and Rottweil, within Denkingen’s municipal boundaries, and drops steeply into the valley to the west. For hiking, it is therefore not only the name of the plateau that matters, but also the direction in which the terrain falls away. When planning a hike, you can make the route at Klippeneck the focus or include individual named points in your plans.
Hiking Trails at Klippeneck
The Donauberglandweg, the Albsteig Swabian Alb, the Donauwellen premium trail Klippeneck-Steig, and other local circular hiking trails in the municipality of Denkingen pass by Klippeneck. In Denkingen, the HW 3 also follows the same route as the HW 1 over Klippeneck and continues toward Dreifaltigkeitsberg. This means there are several named trails and local circular routes, as well as the specific continuation of the HW 3 and HW 1 to Dreifaltigkeitsberg. Check the latest route information for your chosen trail before setting off. This lets you consider the trail name and the direction you want to go together.
Rest and Orientation
The Kreuzsteige rest and barbecue area is located on the heights of Klippeneck in Denkingen, along the main hiking trails HW 1 and HW 3. It was originally established by the municipality of Denkingen. In 2017, the Denkingen branch of the Swabian Alb Association built the “Kreuzsteighütte” shelter at Kreuzsteige. Kreuzsteige refers to the rest and barbecue area, while Kreuzsteighütte is the shelter built there—a useful distinction when planning a stop.
Another point of orientation is the panorama board, which the municipality of Denkingen installed on the Klippeneck plateau in 2010 with funding support. It is near the hiking car park and at the starting point of many hiking trails. Its location offers an additional reference point when planning a route from the hiking car park.
Slope Edge, Monument and Local History
In 2019, the Denkingen branch of the Swabian Alb Association installed a wave lounger at the slope’s edge, offering an impressive view. The GEO Monument stands at the slope’s edge by the Klippeneck hiking car park. The municipality of Denkingen erected it in 2018 to mark the municipality’s 1,200th anniversary. The two features therefore have different connections: the monument commemorates the municipal anniversary, while the wave lounger is associated with the view from the slope’s edge. If you plan to stop at the rest area, the shelter or the wave lounger, check in advance that they are currently accessible.
There is also a Swabian Alb Association fountain on Denkingen’s main road. It was installed in 1996 with support from the municipality and the company SchwerPräzision. This adds a view of Denkingen itself to the trails and points of orientation at Klippeneck.
