The Maria Hilf church ruin on the Welschenberg, the Mühlheim Cave and the historic Upper Town each lend a distinctive character to Mühlheim an der Donau. The International Danube Cycle Path also runs directly through the town. When planning your trip and accommodation, it is worth first distinguishing between cultural events, nature-related activities, and cycling and hiking routes. This lets you tailor your stay to your own interests rather than trying to fit everything into a single day.
Caves and geological features
The Mühlheim Cave formed in the Lower Mass Limestone of the Upper Jurassic. A 93-metre section of the cave can be explored via ladders and bridges. Its features include sinter pools, large stalagmite columns and numerous thin ceiling stalactites. The rock structure and individual formations offer different insights into the cave.
The Mühlheim Felsenhöhle (Mühlheim Rock Cave) is part of the Buchhalde-Oberes Donautal nature reserve. Since 2022, it has been one of the Geopoints of the Swabian Alb Geopark. It traditionally opens for the annual Cave Day in the Donaubergland region. If you plan to attend, check the date and current access information in advance.
Upper Town, churches and history
The historic character of Mühlheim’s Upper Town has been preserved since the 14th century. Historic trails lead through the Upper Town and the districts, introducing visitors to buildings and sights. The nature trail known as Bergsteig has a specific destination: the circular route starts in Mühlheim, leads to the Maria Hilf church ruin on the Welschenberg and passes through Bergsteig near Fridingen. The ruin is the remains of a Baroque pilgrimage church. This means visitors can choose between trails through the town and a circular route with a named destination.
Frescoes dating from the 9th century were found in the former parish church of St. Gallus in Mühlheim’s cemetery grounds. The cemetery complex includes the Gallus Church, the Veit Chapel and the Mount of Olives. The ensemble is considered an important historical and art-historical centre for Mühlheim and the surrounding area.
Fasnet, night watchmen and theatre
Mühlheim is considered a stronghold of Alemannic Fasnet. The fools’ tree is erected on Schmotziger Donnerstag; specific Fasnet details may vary. The traditional Thomasmarkt traders’ market is also part of the local calendar and takes place on the third Saturday in October. Check the details for the relevant year if you plan your trip around one of these dates.
Night-watchman tours lead through Mühlheim’s historic Upper Town. They take place on Saturdays at 9 pm and, from May to October, additionally on Mondays at 9 pm; the meeting point is at the town hall. As the seasonal schedule may change, check the current date before your visit.
The former Mühlheim railway station building houses a puppet theatre and, in the former waiting room, the TheaterBahnhof cabaret stage. The Bachmann-Légrand family presents its own productions and guest performances there. If you are planning a theatre evening, check the current programme.
Cycling, hiking and other activities
The International Danube Cycle Path runs directly through Mühlheim an der Donau and can also be cycled in short stages. Nearby, the Kraftstein Circuit, designated a DonauWelle Premium Hiking Trail since 2014, leads through the Ursental valley. It passes the former medieval castles of Kraftstein Castle Ruins and Wallenburg Castle Ruins, as well as the remains of Altrietheim and Bräunisburg ruins. The options therefore differ mainly in format: a cycling route that can be ridden in stages, and a nearby hiking loop with historic stops.
Next to Mühlheim Bike Park is a playground with a slide, swings and climbing frame. Facilities may change; check current visitor information if you are planning specifically around them. Mühlheim’s indoor swimming pool has a 20 × 8-metre swimming pool. The operator can provide information about current visiting regulations. These activities complement the town’s history and routes with more ways to shape your stay around your own interests.
