St. Stephanus and an 8.1 km hiking trail give Hausen ob Verena two clearly distinct themes: architectural and art history, and outdoor recreation. There is also the museum at Hofgut Hohenkarpfen, which hosts two temporary exhibitions each year. When planning a stay, you can take your cue from culture, exhibitions or a hike. Check the museum’s current visitor information and trail conditions in advance.

St. Stephanus: architectural history and art

The Protestant church of St. Stephanus in Hausen ob Verena has a Gothic choir. The nave was remodelled in 1769. These details highlight different aspects: the choir is distinguished by its Gothic architecture, while a specific date is given for the remodelling of the nave.

The church contains a high altar predella dating from around 1500, attributed to a master of the Ulm School. A predella is the lower part of an altarpiece. Another work is the votive painting by Hans III von Karpfen for his wife Ursula, née Reischach. She died in 1559; the painting is attributed to the Nuremberg School of Barthel Beham. These details involve different art-historical aspects: for the predella, the approximate date is the main point; for the votive painting, it is its dedication to a named couple and attribution to a different school.

Exhibitions and hiking trail

The museum at Hofgut Hohenkarpfen hosts two temporary exhibitions each year. Its exhibition programme has a different focus from the architectural and art history of St. Stephanus. If you are planning a visit, check the museum’s current visitor information.

The “From Hausen ob Verena to Hohenkarpfen” hiking trail is 8.1 km long. It starts at the Bergstraße hiking car park in Hausen ob Verena. The name, starting point and length help you consider the route as a trip in its own right. Since trail conditions can change, check them before setting out. The stated length alone does not tell you about current conditions along the route.
