The mountain landscape of the Valle de Iruelas stretches from the Embalse del Burguillo at 730 metres to Cerro de La Escusa at 1,950 metres. The Reserva Natural Valle de Iruelas is a protected natural area and is included as a nature reserve in the network of protected natural spaces of Castile and León. The valley is also classified as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) and as a Site of Community Importance in the Natura 2000 network. Protected habitats include those of the cinereous vulture and the Spanish imperial eagle.
Landscapes and Trails in Avila
The wider province of Ávila also has a marked contrast in landscape: the centre and north are more mountainous, while the south is milder and includes the Valle del Tiétar. The province’s hiking options range from easy trails suitable for children and accessible to people with reduced mobility to challenging mountain routes. This variety is a useful distinction when choosing a route; not all trails have the same characteristics. Hiking is considered one of the province’s most important natural and tourist attractions.
The routes also differ in their course and stated duration. The Ruta de los Castillos from La Adrada to Mombeltrán can be completed in one day. The Camino de Santiago in La Moraña begins in Ávila; it can be covered by car in one day, while a weekend break is recommended for walking it. These are different time estimates for different modes of travel, not a walking time for the hike.
The Ruta Teresiana de los Caminos y Posadas passes through towns in Alto Tiétar and the Comarca Alberche-Pinares and connects them with the Camino de Santiago de Levante. The GR180 through the Valle del Tiétar follows traditional paths with preserved bridges, walls and paved sections. It is worth checking current conditions before setting out on the GR180, the Camino de Santiago in La Moraña or the Ruta Teresiana; services may also change on the latter two routes.
Medieval Architecture and City History
The city of Ávila was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 and is regarded as a medieval city where Jews, Mudéjars and Christians lived together. The ramparts of the Murallas de Ávila can be accessed via the Casa de las Carnicerías, the Puerta del Alcázar or the Puente Adaja. A fully accessible section of the city walls can also be reached through the Puerta del Puente. For visits to the city, the Centro de Recepción de Visitantes lends wheelchairs for a maximum of one day. Check the current access and loan conditions in advance.
The Catedral de San Salvador features medieval architecture and may have been the first Gothic cathedral in Castile. It is considered a fortress cathedral because its apse forms the strongest tower in the city walls. This architectural relationship makes the connection between religious architecture and fortification tangible. The Real Monasterio de Santo Tomás is another striking testament to the history of architecture: this Gothic monastery complex dates back to its founding in 1480. It consists mainly of a single-nave church with a Latin-cross floor plan and three cloisters—the Cloister of Silence, the Novitiate Cloister and the Royal Cloister.
Museums and Regional Discoveries
The Museo Oriental is also located in the Real Monasterio de Santo Tomás. Its eleven rooms display works from Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines and China; check which exhibitions are currently on view before visiting. The Museo López Berrón de Arte y Etnografía offers a different perspective: a visit includes a restored old farmhouse with a ground floor, courtyard and agricultural implements. Everyday objects and tools used by earlier generations are on display. Check access details before your visit.
Traditional dishes from the province of Ávila include Judías del Barco, Carne de Ávila and Yemas de Ávila. In the Vino de Cebreros area, many wineries offer tours as well as wine tourism and gastronomic experiences. Alongside nature, trails and architecture, regional cuisine and wine offer further topics to explore. As participating wineries and their offers may change, check current availability in advance.
