Peguerinos combines hiking and mountain biking routes with striking viewpoints and local history. An archaeological connection to the monastery complex of El Escorial adds to the picture; trenches, former shepherds’ shelters and the church provide further cultural and historical highlights. Landscape and history may offer different focal points when choosing a place to stay.

Hiking Trails, Viewpoints and High-Altitude Destinations

The routes in Peguerinos are recommended for hiking and mountain biking. A 2013 municipal route description notes that the Ruta de la Naranjera offers views across the Sierra de Guadarrama and, on clear days, of Madrid’s tallest towers. For the Ruta de Cabeza Lijar, it mentions a viewpoint and the summit where the provinces of Ávila, Segovia and Madrid meet. According to the same description, the Ruta Cueva Valiente leads to a peak whose elevation is given as 1,903 m.

The routes have different highlights: views across the Sierra and of Madrid, the meeting point of three provinces, or a peak with a specific elevation. The description explicitly links views of the tallest towers to clear days; it lists views across the Sierra as a separate attraction. When comparing routes, you can therefore consider each route’s destination and the views described.

Beyond the individual route destinations, trails from Peguerinos offer views of the Valle de los Caídos and across the entire comarca as far as Madrid. From Peguerinos, trails connect with El Escorial via the Puerto de Avantos and lead to the Puerto de Los Leones.

Archaeological Traces and Local History

The Fuente de las Negras archaeological site is connected to the monastery complex of El Escorial. A total of 610 granite blocks were documented there, intended for hydraulic infrastructure to connect Peguerinos to the complex. Remains of a water conduit also appear to be present at Fuente de las Negras; it was intended to collect water from the Arroyo Navalacuerda stream.

Trenches from the Spanish Civil War are among the highlighted visitor destinations in Peguerinos. The local tourism description from 2013 described most of the war ruins as being in very good condition overall. Former shepherds’ shelters are also among the featured destinations. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Concepción is a prominent landmark in Peguerinos.

El Escorial features in these contexts in different roles: as a destination on trails via the Puerto de Avantos, and as part of the monastery complex connected to Fuente de las Negras. Thus, a described trail connection and the archaeological history of the site sit alongside one another without being the same subject.

Recreation Area and Visitor Information

For an outdoor break, the Área de La Nava recreation area, with its picnic area, is a specific point of reference. It has tables, benches and a rustic stone fountain.

The Oficina de Turismo de Peguerinos is located at Plaza de la Iglesia, Plaza de la Constitución 1, in Peguerinos, 05239 Ávila. Check visitor information again before you travel.
