Santa María del Tiétar can be explored through its historic buildings and paths across the landscape of the Tiétar Valley. The church in the town center, local routes, and the GR180 long-distance trail represent different scales: from a specific local landmark to a 200-kilometer hiking route through the valley. When planning a stay, you can therefore choose between cultural heritage, a local path, and a broader hiking perspective.

Church and Historic Landmarks

The church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is located in the center of Santa María del Tiétar. It dates from the 16th century and underwent extensive renovations in the 1960s. Its construction and later renovation therefore belong to different periods. The Ermita de San Marcos marks a different point in time: it was consecrated on October 28, 2006. The church is associated with its origins and renovation, while the ermita is associated with its consecration date. The two sites can thus be placed in different historical contexts: one through its construction and renovation history, the other through its exact consecration date.

Hiking Trails Between the Valley and the Town

The GR180 is a 200-kilometer hiking route through the Tiétar Valley and part of the European long-distance trail network. It offers a broad perspective on hiking. By contrast, the access route to the Zahúrdas de La Cancha first follows the paved road from Santa María to the Ermita de San Marcos, then continues along the signed Las Presas route. If you plan to take this route, check its current condition before setting out. This lets you weigh up a long-distance trail and a specific local destination without assuming that both require the same kind of planning.

One route in Santa María del Tiétar passes through a landscape of chestnut trees, alders, pines, and willows, as well as waterbirds. It also leads to old mills that still retain parts of their working mechanisms. This route thus brings natural features together with traces of milling technology. If you enjoy taking in the landscape and cultural history while hiking, you can find both along this route.

Festivals and When to Visit

The patron-saint festivals in Santa María del Tiétar honor San Marcos on April 25 and Nuestra Señora de la Asunción on August 15. Both dates are fixed on the calendar, one in spring and the other in summer. A craft fair is also held on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Unlike the patron-saint festivals, it follows the movable dates of Holy Week, so the specific calendar dates matter when planning a trip. If you want to time your visit to coincide with a festival, check the current dates and programs in advance.
