Arévalo combines a distinctive Mudéjar heritage with routes along two rivers and a regional Tostón tradition. You can therefore plan your trip around different interests: architecture and history, a tour in the countryside, or a gastronomic event.

Mudéjar heritage in the castle, churches and chapel

Arévalo has been designated a historic-artistic ensemble (Conjunto Histórico Artístico) and is considered an important example of Mudéjar architecture in Ávila. Arévalo Castle dates from the 15th century. In the 16th century, it was converted into a type of artillery fortress on the orders of the Catholic Monarchs. These two periods give the castle a clear historical development, distinguishing it from its later military transformation.

The churches also offer specific architectural points of interest. The Church of San Martín is known for its two towers: “la de los ajedreces” and “la nueva”. On its south side is an arcaded gallery, one of the few surviving examples of this architectural feature in the province of Ávila. The Church of San Miguel is recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC). The Ermita de la Caminanta is a small 16th-century chapel built of dressed stone blocks. It stands at the exit of the Puente de Medina.

The Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza offers a different perspective on the surrounding area. It is located in the Casa del Concejo on Plaza del Real, above the Arévalo Tourist Office. Its exhibits cover local flora and fauna, as well as grain. Check the current opening hours before visiting.

River routes and nature watching

The riverside walk follows paths along the Adaja and Arevalillo rivers and extends for just over four kilometres. Along the way, the route crosses several medieval Mudéjar bridges. This means the walk brings together river scenery and an architectural feature of Arévalo, without making them the same focus. With a little luck, you may spot herons, kingfishers and deer along the walk. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed; also check current trail conditions before setting out.

For a longer circular route, consider the Senda de la Fuente de los Lobos: it starts in Arévalo, is about 14 kilometres long and offers opportunities to observe steppe birds. The distances provide a practical guide when choosing between the river route of just over four kilometres and the longer circular trail. Steppe bird sightings are also seasonal and cannot be reliably predicted.

Camino de Levante and the Tostón tradition

The Camino de Levante passes through Arévalo; the town is part of stages 23 and 24. Several routes also meet at the Ermita de la Caminanta, including the Camino de Santiago route coming from the Levante. If you are interested in the pilgrimage route, there are two distinct points of reference here: the Camino stage designation and the described route junction at the chapel. Check current route information when planning a specific stage.

Arévalo is also associated with Tostón, or roast suckling pig, as a local specialty. The Jornadas Gastronómicas Tostón de Arévalo take place every year in February or March. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, confirm the specific dates in advance. Architecture, river routes and the gastronomic event each offer a different way to shape your stay, without requiring you to fit every theme into the same itinerary.

Getting there and finding accommodation

Arévalo is located on the A-6 motorway. When looking for a hotel in Arévalo, you can start by deciding what brings you here: would you like to focus on Mudéjar architecture, one of the routes of different lengths, or the Tostón event? An accommodation website does not replace checking specific visiting conditions, trail conditions or event dates.
