Cebreros brings together a pilgrim route, architectural history, space exploration, wine and festive traditions.

The Camino de Levante and literary traces

The Camino de Levante, part of the Camino de Santiago, passes through Cebreros. Coming from San Martín de Valdeiglesias, it reaches the town along a 14.27-kilometre stretch. From Cebreros, a 37.2-kilometre stage continues to Ávila. These figures describe two different sections of the route: Cebreros is the destination of one and the starting point of the next. If you plan your trip around a pilgrim stage, you can factor these distances into your plans separately.

The Ruta Cela offers a different perspective. It is linked to Camilo JosĂ© Cela’s stays in Cebreros between 1947 and 1950. During this time, he completed La Colmena there and found inspiration for works such as El gallego y su cuadrilla. This literary connection adds a distinct historical thread through the town to the pilgrim route.

Architectural history, landmarks and space exploration

The Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol brings together several architectural influences: Alonso de Covarrubias drew up its plans, and the involvement of Pedro de Tolosa gave the building a strongly Herrerian style. Its furnishings include polychromed pinewood works embellished with gold leaf, with paintings by Giuseppe de Leonardo. The Iglesia Vieja de Santiago tells a different architectural story: it was built in the second half of the 14th century in the Elizabethan Gothic style and rebuilt in the 15th century. Together, these buildings reflect different periods in the town’s history.

For those interested in space exploration, the Sala Universo is a destination in its own right. A municipal visitor information notice dated 27 August 2026 describes it as the European Space Agency’s visitor centre in Cebreros and the ESA’s only facility of its kind in Europe. It presents the ESA’s activities and missions throughout its history, along with various resources the organisation offers for everyday use. Digital tools and accessible explanations shape the visitor experience.

La Picota is also part of the town’s history: this 16th-century Rollo de justicia is considered a landmark of Cebreros and stands on the historic route between Valladolid and Toledo. Those interested in architecture and historical landmarks will find another tangible point of interest here, alongside the churches.

Valsordo and year-round festivals

The hermitage and surroundings of Valsordo lie just over two kilometres from Cebreros, in the direction of the Valsordo bridges, where the Alberche flows past. Pine trees, rockroses and numerous Garnacha Cebrereña vines grow in the area. The landscape, river and vineyards offer a different perspective on the surroundings from the town’s buildings.

The RomerĂa takes place on the first Sunday in May in the area around the Valsordo hermitage. The procession around the hermitage ends with an auction and bidding for the banzos. If you would like to tie your stay in with this event, you can take the first Sunday in May into account when planning your trip.

The Cebreros Carnival is a tradition celebrated in the town for more than two hundred years; in 2021, it was recognised as a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Spain. The carnival includes a sweets competition that is open to everyone. Visitors can sample the participants’ entries.

Wine and traditional sweets

Cebreros’ traditional cuisine is particularly known for its sweets and wine. Traditional sweets include rosquillas, huesillos, retorcidos, mantecados, flores, magdalenas and sequillos. The grape harvest festival adds to this culinary connection with wine tastings and talks by wineries and oenologists. The programme also includes a grape-cutting and grape-treading competition.

Tierras de Cebreros offers guided winery tours and wine tastings at its location in Cebreros. If you plan a visit, check the date and availability with the provider in advance. Many wineries in the wider Cebreros wine region also organise winery tours, as well as wine and gastronomy days. This offers both a specific visitor experience in town and a broader connection to the region’s wine.
