Velayos brings together the open countryside of La Moraña, archaeological traces and a calendar of religious festivals. When planning your trip, you can choose between a rural setting, historic buildings and several seasonal events. These include everything from Holy Week to festivals in May and October.

La Moraña: Open Fields and a Steppe Lagoon

Velayos is located in La Moraña, in the northeast of the province of Ávila. The terrain is flat to gently rolling and surrounded by open fields planted with grain. This landscape gives the village a distinctly rural setting and is a focus in its own right alongside its archaeological and architectural remains.

Near Velayos is the small steppe lagoon Laguna de la Somadilla, which serves as a watering place for livestock. Together with the grain fields, it shows that the landscape is shaped by both arable farming and livestock raising.

Archaeological Sites and Historic Buildings

El Torreón and Prado Serrano are archaeological sites within the municipality. The Torreón de la Puebla de Valderrábanos is a square tower with a cubic cross-section. Its masonry is made of horizontally arranged bricks of Arab type, above a plinth of large blocks of gray granite. The tower is dilapidated and at high risk of collapse. Keep your distance and do not plan to visit it.

The parish church Iglesia parroquial de Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción de Santa María de la Vega y Lugar de Velayos is less than 300 meters west of Velayos, on the crest of a gentle hill. About three kilometers northeast of Velayos, just beyond the railway line, stands the surviving, towering La Aldihuela Tower, in the abandoned settlement of La Puebla. The two buildings are therefore distinguished by their locations: the church west of the village and La Aldihuela to the northeast.

Festivals in Velayos: Holy Week, May and October

The festival in honor of San Isidro Labrador takes place on May 15. It includes a procession to the fields for the traditional blessing of the crops. If you are traveling for the procession, check the program for that year in advance.

Every year during Holy Week, romances by Lope de Vega are recited in Velayos. The texts are from the work Rimas Sacras, published in 1614. This literary event complements the religious festival traditions and the blessing of the fields in May.

The main festival in honor of the Virgen de la Soledad is celebrated on the second weekend of October. It includes a novillada at the bullring “Real Maestranza de la Soledad.” For this event too, it is worth checking that year’s program before traveling.

There are therefore several different reasons to choose when to visit: the procession on May 15, the romances during Holy Week or the October festival with its novillada. You can plan your visit around a particular event rather than simply choosing a general time of year.
