Villarejo del Valle is one of the municipalities in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park. The town lies in the Valle del Tiétar and the Barranco de las Cinco Villas, at an altitude of 825 metres at the foot of Torozo and the Riscos de Villarejo. This makes it possible to combine orientation around named natural areas with specific hikes and a remarkably varied townscape. The Mirador de la Mesita del Calvario is on the Senda de las Cinco Villas and offers views over almost the entire Barranco.

Compare hiking routes by duration and route type

Los Arrieros is listed as an 11.6-kilometre out-and-back route, with an estimated walking time of about 3.1 hours. Los Cercaos is a 3.1-kilometre circular route, taking approximately 1.3 hours. The two trails therefore differ in their stated distance, estimated time and route type: Los Cercaos is the shorter option, while Los Arrieros takes longer as an out-and-back route. These details offer a practical comparison when deciding how much time to set aside for a hike.

El Torozo is also listed as a mountain hiking route in Villarejo del Valle. Along with the two trails described above, this tour offers another way to explore the area on foot. The view from the Mirador de la Mesita del Calvario adds a broader perspective on the landscape: from there, the view extends over almost the entire Barranco de las Cinco Villas.

Churches, chapels and local history

The Iglesia de San Bartolomé Apóstol dates from the 15th century and was built in the Isabelline Gothic style. Inside are Baroque altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. Its architecture and furnishings therefore reflect different historical periods. The area around the church is also considered an example of traditional architecture in the Barranco de las Cinco Villas.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Gracia is dedicated to the town’s patron saint. It is built from granite blocks and has a covered, symmetrical and well-proportioned façade. The Ermita de San Antón is a smaller masonry building with a barrel vault; it may date from the 17th century. Inside is an altar made of Talavera ceramics.

Another glimpse into local history is offered by the Vivienda del músico López Álmagro. It is associated with the composer and harmonium professor López Álmagro, who spent the last years of his life in Villarejo del Valle. The Rollo de Jurisdicción stands beside a fountain dating from 1837 and has three heads at its top. The wrought-iron Monumento al Arriero is also located on the wall of the Plaza de España. It honours the local muleteers, an occupation that was common in the history of the municipality.

Festivals and summer swimming

For the San Antón festival, pets are brought to the Ermita de San Antón on 17 January to receive the saint’s blessing. San Bartolo is celebrated on 24 August with bull runs and a verbena. Check municipal announcements for current dates and programme details. During Holy Week, people in Villarejo del Valle sing Los Romances de Lope de Vega and play the traditional game Las Caras.

The natural swimming pool offers a place to swim on hot summer days. However, it is not listed in the bathing water register of Castilla y León. Check current local advisories before visiting.
