Those choosing Piedrahita for a stay can explore its history, art, walking routes and seasonal air sports. Plaza Mayor, the remains of the medieval city walls and the Palacio de los Duques de Alba offer several specific points of interest in the town’s cultural history.

Townscape and Historical Layers

Since 10 January 2008, Piedrahita has been protected by the Junta de Castilla y León as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. The Plaza Mayor ensemble comprises 41 traditional buildings; the typically Castilian square is almost entirely lined with arcades. Remains of the medieval city walls from the 12th and 15th centuries have been preserved. The walls enclosed the town and had five gates: the Ávila Gate, the El Mirón Gate, the El Barco Gate, the La Horcajada Gate and the Puerta Nueva, which was opened in the 15th century. The buildings around the square and the fortifications thus represent different aspects of the townscape that has been handed down over time.

Palace, Convent and Art

The Palacio de los Duques de Alba was built between 1755 and 1766 on the site of the former castle of the Álvarez de Toledo family. Francisco de Goya stayed at the palace in 1786. The palace includes a garden laid out later, with flowerbeds, fountains and ponds; today it is a municipal park. The building’s history, the former castle and the later garden give the palace complex several distinct historical layers.

The Carmelite convent also brings architecture and art together. Its portal dates from the late 15th century and bears the coat of arms of the Dukes of Alba. The painting “El Granadino” by Alonso Cano belongs to the convent and is currently exhibited as part of the Museo de Arte Sacro de Piedrahita. If you would like to see the painting, check its exhibition status before your trip.

Walking Routes and Seasonal Activities

The route to Cerro de la Cruz is an approximately 8.5-kilometre circular walk that starts and ends in Piedrahita. Along the way, there are expansive views across the Valle del Corneja. The Ruta de la Salud offers a different type of route: it includes a 22.82-kilometre stage from Piedrahita to Villanueva del Campillo. The difference in length and route helps you choose between the shorter circular walk and the longer stage according to the distance you want to cover.

Hang-gliding and paragliding take place in Piedrahita from April to the end of October. Weather conditions and provider availability vary, so check in advance whether this activity is available on your travel dates. The season provides a general timeframe, but you should still confirm arrangements with the relevant provider.

Local Cuisine and Event Dates

Visitors to Piedrahita can try Avileña beef and products made from Iberian pork. Patatas revolconas with torreznos are among the town’s traditional dishes served at slaughter festivals. Alongside the architectural sights, regional products and a dish with a clear connection to local festivities are also on the list of things to discover.

The Romería of the Valle del Corneja in honour of its patron saint takes place each year at the Ermita de la Virgen de la Vega on the first Monday after Pentecost Sunday. Because its date depends on Easter, it does not fall on the same calendar date every year. A national fair is held annually on the last weekend in June; dates may vary in some years. It includes a traditional market, recreating an 18th-century market, with crafts and products made from food, wood, metal, glass, textiles and silver. The fair also features an exhibition of Spanish thoroughbred horses from stud farms across Spain. Check the event dates and programme for your travel year in advance.

Plan Your Stay

Conditions vary, so be sure to check your travel dates against the flying season and changing event dates in particular. This will help you tailor your search to what you want to do in Piedrahita, without combining the different activities into a single fixed programme.

The Oficina de Turismo de Piedrahita is located at Plaza Nueva de la Villa, s/n, 05500 Piedrahita, Ávila, Castilla y León. If you plan to visit, check its opening details in advance.
