Cardeñosa brings together archaeological evidence, a strong granite tradition and distinctive church buildings. When planning your visit, you can choose from a range of themes: the history of settlement at Castro de Las Cogotas, the art in the Iglesia de la Invención de la Santa Cruz, or the town’s architectural styles. This lets you shape your stay around the subjects that interest you most.

Archaeology at Castro de Las Cogotas

Studies at Castro de Las Cogotas reveal two phases of settlement: Cogotas I from the Late Bronze Age and the later Cogotas II phase of the Vettones. The fortifications include a double ring and a field of upright stones intended to hinder access by cavalry. These details give the site a significance beyond that of a mere collection of wall remains: they point to different phases of settlement and to the protection of the site.

The Castro is located on the River Adaja, near the dam of the reservoir of the same name. Granite blocks, dense stands of holm oak and grazing land characterise the surrounding landscape. The Aula Arqueológica Castro de Las Cogotas complements this archaeological focus with interactive information about the site’s history, culture, settlement, economy and urban planning. Groups needing a guided tour can arrange visits with the municipal administration if required; check current availability in advance.

Various signposted routes lead from the Aula to other destinations. The Ruta de los Poblados Medievales is a circular route to the medieval settlements of Cardeñosa, which can be completed on foot or by bicycle. Three routes lead to the Arco de Conejeros: two are suitable for walking or cycling, while another can also be travelled by car. According to a municipal notice from February 2022, the Aula was scheduled to be open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Check the current opening hours before travelling.

Church art and medieval traces

The Iglesia de la Invención de la Santa Cruz dates from the 15th century. Its polygonal apse is supported by sturdy ashlar buttresses, and the central nave features a Mudéjar coffered ceiling. The church also houses the sculpture group “Virgen del Pajarito”, created by Vasco de la Zarza. A small museum in the sacristy contains paintings, triptychs, chalices, patens and liturgical vestments. The architecture, sculpture and liturgical objects reveal different aspects of the area’s cultural heritage.

The Ermita del Berrocal, also known as Nuestra Señora del Tránsito or del Cristo, lies on high ground southeast of Cardeñosa. Its altarpiece dates from the 16th century. Another historical landmark is the Arco de Conejeros: it is the transverse arch of the church of a settlement mentioned in 1250. The archaeological remains of Conejeros also include a necropolis with eight visible stone-slab graves. These buildings and finds can be distinguished by period and function, rather than being treated as a single monument.

Granite in the townscape and in local tradition

Cardeñosa preserves many traditional houses typical of the mountain region. Rear courtyards, elongated façades and granite details on walls, lintels and doorposts define this architectural style. This is complemented by the granite masonry tradition, passed down through generations and linked to the quarries in the surrounding area. Together, the houses and craftsmanship offer a perspective on granite not only as a building material but also as part of local history.

The Urban Crosses are also a way to explore the town’s cultural heritage. A printed brochure lists their locations and includes photographs and brief descriptions; it is available at the town hall. Cardeñosa’s cultural heritage mural depicts the Tres Cruces, the Arco de Conejeros, the Cruz del Bujero, the Cruz del Campanario and the Cruz de la Iglesia. Alongside these named places is the local legend of Santa Paula Barbada, which places her birth in Cardeñosa in the early, dark centuries of the Middle Ages. As a legend, it represents a different kind of tradition from the archaeological settlement phases and dated buildings.
