Guisando lies in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park and was declared a historic, artistic and scenic ensemble in 1974. Its connection to nature and local history are both part of its character. Your stay can focus on Guisando’s traditions and trails through the village, or include other named destinations. Which of these aspects shapes your stay depends on whether you are more interested in cultural heritage, scenery or observing nature.

Trails through Guisando and to La Mira

A signposted route takes you through the most beautiful places in Guisando, offering insights into its history, culture and heritage. Another route leads from the Nogal del Barranco platform to La Mira. The platform is four kilometres from the village. The trails differ in their routes: one goes through Guisando, while the other starts at Nogal del Barranco and leads to La Mira. The El Risquillo Visitor Centre provides information to help you plan hikes and other activities in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park.

Nogal del Barranco, birdwatching and astrotourism

The Nogal del Barranco platform is home to a monument to the Iberian ibex, the centuries-old Nogal del Barranco tree and a group of well-preserved shepherds’ huts. The site is considered a place of particular interest for birdwatching in the province of Ávila. Nature observation here is therefore linked to the region’s shepherding culture. Guisando also has an astrotourism viewpoint at the end of the road to Hoyuelo. The two destinations offer different experiences: birdwatching is the focus at Nogal del Barranco, while the viewpoint on the Hoyuelo road is geared towards astrotourism.

Natural swimming pools and local traditions

Natural swimming pools can be found at the campsite, in El Risquillo and along the river. These sites are spread across different parts of the area, while the viewpoint is at the end of the road to Hoyuelo. When planning your visit, you can consider these destinations as separate interests alongside the hiking trails.

Carnival is celebrated in a chapel on Shrove Tuesday. Residents wear traditional costumes and dance to the sound of a Gaitilla; afterwards, the community serves lemonade and sweets. San Miguel is celebrated on 29 September. Guisando’s festivities also include traditional celebrations, a communal meal featuring young bull meat in the square and, occasionally, a traditional music group. The difference between the two dates can help you plan your travel: Carnival follows Shrove Tuesday, while San Miguel falls on a fixed date, 29 September.

Getting there and finding accommodation

Guisando is 150 kilometres from Madrid. The road route follows the Comarcal 501, the Alcorcón–Plasencia road, as far as Arenas de San Pedro; from there, a five-kilometre provincial road leads to Guisando. To decide whether the village suits your trip, you can weigh up the journey and your interests together: options include cultural heritage and festivals in the village, the signposted route, birdwatching, astrotourism and natural swimming pools. If you are looking for a hotel in Guisando, these highlights can help you choose a destination that fits your travel plans.
