Castles, a Renaissance palace, a treetop walkway almost a kilometre long, and routes through forests and lake landscapes offer different ways to explore Potsdam-Mittelmark. When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide first whether cultural history, a route as a destination in its own right, or activities on the water should take centre stage. The places below differ in theme and scale; they need not be treated as a fixed itinerary.
Castles, a residence and palace history
Eisenhardt Castle, perched above Bad Belzig, is a cultural landmark that lets visitors experience the Middle Ages at first hand. Ziesar Castle offers a different historical perspective: in the Middle Ages, it was an important episcopal residence and impresses with its well-preserved architecture. Visitors can immerse themselves in the religious and political history of Potsdam-Mittelmark there. At Wiesenburg Palace, the focus is on the Renaissance; the palace is surrounded by a landscaped park. Reckahn Palace, meanwhile, is dedicated to the life and work of the Prussian reformer Friedrich Eberhard von Rochow. The permanent exhibition “Reason for the People” has been on display in the palace since 2001. These different themes range from medieval castles to the Renaissance and its parks, as well as an exhibition dedicated to a particular historical figure.
Beelitz: Asparagus Route and treetop walkway
The Beelitz Asparagus Route connects the asparagus farms in the districts of the town of Beelitz. It can be followed by car, as well as on cycling and hiking trails. This offers various ways to follow the route, whose theme remains firmly tied to the asparagus farms. The treetop walkway in the forest park of the Beelitz Sanatoriums offers a different view of the surroundings. The elevated walkway is almost a kilometre long and runs through species-rich mixed forest and the historic buildings of the former A Quadrant. The two attractions offer different experiences: a themed route connecting several districts, and an elevated walkway with a clearly defined course through forest and historic buildings.
Water, forest and outdoor activities
The Wusterwitz administrative district on Lake Wusterwitz offers opportunities for water sports, as well as cycling and hiking tours. Beetzsee combines water sports with species-rich landscapes and protected areas. In the forest- and lake-rich municipality of Kloster Lehnin, Lake Klostersee is a place to relax. These destinations offer different experiences: Wusterwitz features several activities, Beetzsee brings water sports and landscapes together, while Kloster Lehnin is about relaxing by the lake. When planning, you can therefore first weigh up whether you want to focus on different kinds of outdoor activities, water sports in a protected natural setting, or relaxation by the water.
Routes in the High Fläming
In Potsdam-Mittelmark, the High Fläming impresses with dense forests, gentle hills and historic castles. The Castle Trail is 148 kilometres long, runs through the entire High Fläming Nature Park and connects the region’s four castles. This is on a different scale from the treetop walkway in Beelitz, which is almost a kilometre long: the Castle Trail is a long route through the nature park, while the treetop walkway is a single elevated path through forest and historic buildings. The EuroVelo 1 cycle route also runs through Potsdam-Mittelmark, passing through landscapes and historic towns. The routes therefore differ in activity and scale: a long-distance hiking trail, a cycling route through landscapes and towns, or an elevated walkway with a specified course.
